It’s been several weeks, if not month, that we were waiting for the official presentation of the next Huawei mobile chip, the Kirin 980. It’s done. The Chinese giant’s new SoC is the first to be engraved in 7 nanometers and officially announced. It could also be the first marketed unless Apple is faster to draw his iPhone.
Anyway, he has more than one argument to make. In parallel with the reduction of the engraving size, the manufacturer has managed to propose a 20% increase in performance and 40% efficiency of the SoC compared to the previous Kirin 970, present in the P20, P20 Pro, Honor View 10, Honor 10 and Mate 10 Pro. In any case, that is what Huawei promises.
Always more artificial intelligence
In addition to these optimizations, he is also the first to integrate hearts from the ARM Cortex-A76 architecture. There are four of them, of which two are clocked at 2.6 GHz to meet the highest tasks and two others at 1.92 GHz for more moderate performance requirements. In addition to this, the SoC comes with the ARM Cortex-A55 4-core 1.8 GHz to provide the power for more basic tasks. To orchestrate all this, the CPU uses the Flexi-Scheduling system, which intelligently chooses which heart to activate, as needed.
The ARM Mali-G76 GPU comes with two NPU components to boost artificial intelligence. As a reminder, the Kirin 970 had to be content with a single neural processor, especially dedicated to image recognition.
Kirin above Qualcomm?
The other important point is that the Kirin 980 could have a better energy management than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. Huawei announces 30% better! Remember that the 845, engraved in 10 nanometers, was launched at the beginning of the year and has proven itself on a good part of Android flagship stores.
Finally, the connection speed is impressive … on paper. With the Hi1103 chip, the Wi-Fi connection should be able to go up to 1732 Mbit / s. The Category 21 4G LTE modem has a downstream throughput of 1.4 Gbps.
The name of Kirin 980 was invited yesterday with the teasing of Magic 2 by Honor. Contrary to what was thought, it is not the high end, the Mate 20 Pro, which will benefit the first but that of Honor. We are waiting to see. The Mate series will be launched next October.
