Sony significantly lowered its PlayStation 5 sales forecast for fiscal 2023. The company, which previously expected to sell 25 million PS5, reduced this to 21 million. The company made this decision despite generating record revenue in the last three months and selling 8.2 million PS5s by the end of the year. Sony, which has sold 16.4 million PS5s so far this fiscal year, has sold 54.8 million in total.
Sony announced in December that it had sold 50 million PS5s in three years as of December 9, 2023. It took PS5 just a week longer to reach the 50 million mark compared to PS4. At this point, it is worth remembering that PS4 is not struggling with supply chain problems and a global epidemic.
PlayStation’s overall revenue increased by 16 percent compared to the same period last year, thanks in part to an increase in sales of third-party games. However, operating income decreased by 26 percent due to declining first-party game sales and losses on the hardware side due to promotions. This shows that PS5 sales did not meet the company’s expectations, despite the discounts.
Sony does not expect the momentum in PlayStation 5 sales to continue
Sony achieved higher sales in all three quarters of fiscal 2023 compared to the previous year. However, this trend is not expected to continue in the fourth quarter. The company, which sold 6.3 million PlayStation 5 in the fourth quarter of the 2022 fiscal year, expects 4.6 million sales this year.
It is among the information included in Sony’s financial report that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which was released in October 2023, reached 10 million sales as of February 4.
Although Sony lowered its target for PlayStation 5 sales, it should be noted that things are generally going well for the company. Revenue growth was recorded in almost all units of the company.
