Technology giants Apple and Google are once again on the agenda with the latest developments in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). According to Bloomberg, Apple is in talks to license Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) models called Gemini to offer new features in the iPhone’s software. These talks open the doors to another important collaboration between the two companies.
It is stated that Apple is also in talks with OpenAI, which supports Microsoft’s AI capabilities. However, the company’s real interest is in cloud-based productive artificial intelligence technologies. The focus is on Gemini’s potential uses, especially in areas such as text and image rendering. Meanwhile, Apple is also working on its own on-device AI models and capabilities and plans to introduce them soon with iOS 18.
Apple’s AI strategy and Gemini’s role
Negotiations between Apple and Google are still ongoing, and it is not yet clear under what brand the AI deal will be presented. However, this collaboration means expanding the default search engine relationship that currently exists.
Looking at the industry, it seems that Google announced a collaboration with Samsung in January, and Gemini will strengthen the Galaxy S24’s summarization features in notes and voice recording applications, as well as the keyboard. Samsung also uses Imagen 2 text-to-image diffusion for the generative editing feature in the photo gallery app. While all of these features require server-side processing, Samsung also uses an on-device version of Gemini.
Google offers three sizes of Gemini: Pro, used by many first- and third-party apps, Gemini 1.0 Pro, used in the free version of gemini.google.com, and 1.0 Ultra, used in the paid Gemini Advanced level. Google previewed Gemini 1.5 in mid-February with an expanded context window that allows more information to be processed. This technology aims to make AI output “more consistent, relevant and useful.”
Bloomberg reports that Apple is likely to make an agreement with OpenAI or more than one provider, and predicts that an agreement will not be announced until WWDC in June.
