Qualcomm broke the 5 GHz barrier, but the first result is below expectations

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor, which has not yet become official, was displayed in the Geekbench test for the first time following the AnTuTu results. According to Geekbench 6.7 results, the new chip received 3,434 points in single-core and 9,334 points in multi-core. These values ​​​​are lower in both categories compared to the current Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. However, the fact that the test was conducted on an engineering sample suggests that the results do not reflect the final performance of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.

For comparison, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in iQOO 15 reached 3,649 single-core and 10,682 multi-core scores in the same test. Therefore, the early results of the new processor are approximately 6 percent behind in single-core and approximately 13 percent behind in multi-core. While a performance increase is expected from a new generation flagship processor, this picture looks striking at first glance. However, since the software, power management and thermal settings in prototype devices do not reach the level of final products, early Geekbench results do not always reveal the true capacity of the processor. It seems possible that the scores may change as Qualcomm and device manufacturers complete software optimizations.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 reaches 5.01 GHz clock speed

The processor, which appears in Geekbench records with the code SM8975, was referred to as Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro in previous leaks, and was later associated with the name Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. According to the information in the source, the chip comes from TSMC’s 2 nm class N2P production process and has eight CPU cores arranged in 2 + 3 + 3. The fact that the two main cores go up to 5.01 GHz is the most striking detail of the test recording. Thus, it seems that the 5 GHz threshold has been exceeded for the first time in a system chip for smartphones. It should also be noted that clock speed alone does not determine actual usage performance; Architectural efficiency, memory system, cache structure, power consumption and cooling capacity of the device directly affect performance.

Three performance cores in the processor run at 4.03 GHz, and the other three cores run at 3.74 GHz. On the graphics side, it is stated that there is a new Adreno 850 GPU. It seems that Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 also has an advantage against MediaTek’s next generation high-end processor, especially in terms of main core frequency. In the Dimensity 9600 Pro example that recently appeared in Geekbench, it was stated that the highest clock speed was 4.55 GHz. However, Snapdragon’s higher frequency does not directly translate into a higher score in the current Geekbench test; This makes the effect of the processor working on hardware and software that are still under development more visible on the results.

When the Geekbench result is evaluated alone, a weak start can be said for Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. On the other hand, it was previously stated that the same processor reached over 4.8 million points in AnTuTu. The significant difference between the two tests is also due to the fact that different benchmark applications measure CPU, GPU, memory and overall system performance in different ways. While AnTuTu produces a more comprehensive system score, Geekbench focuses mainly on CPU performance. In addition, deficiencies in the software of the engineering sample, the power limits of the processor or the thermal management settings applied during testing may have reduced the Geekbench scores.

Although the 5.01 GHz level shows that Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is technically targeting a high frequency, the decisive point will be how long this speed can be maintained on mass production phones. Since high frequencies can increase power consumption and heat production, phone manufacturers’ cooling systems and performance profiles will play a decisive role here. However, it is too early to conclude from the current Geekbench record that the final version of the processor will be slower than the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Tests from devices close to the retail version will more clearly show both the practical equivalent of the 5 GHz level and the real progress in the CPU performance of Qualcomm’s next generation processor.
