Uber opens ChatGPT Work to 30 thousand employees from a trial of 1,000 people

Uber uses ChatGPT Work in its global operations for approximately 30 thousand employees expands. According to information shared by the company on October 22, the decision follows a pilot study of 1,000 people during the year. The new scope isn’t just limited to software developers. Approximately 80 percent of the participants in the pilot group were non-engineers.

Finance, operations and product teams took part in the first trial. Employees have used the tool for tasks such as examining trends in operational data, localizing training materials for different markets, and creating interactive dashboards for their daily work. These examples are based on a statement from Sumanth Sukumar, Uber’s vice president of engineering. The company did not disclose the measured efficiency gains of each use separately.

In addition, Uber matched 30 artificial intelligence engineers with different teams in the previous part of the year. He gave these groups two weeks to automate some pieces of work. In the new distribution, instead of imposing the same task list on all employees, he wants the teams to try the usage areas. The price of the agreement and its cost per employee were not shared with the public.

Uber’s OpenAI partnership extends to driver vehicles

Uber and OpenAI’s relationship was ongoing before this in-office deployment. The partnership example, released in May, focuses on Uber Assistant, which helps drivers make work decisions. This tool brings together different information, such as revenue trends and demand maps, in a conversational interface. However, this product for drivers and ChatGPT Work, which is available to employees, are not the same application. The same example also shows that the partnership is progressing with products developed via API. For this reason, the new vehicle offered to office workers and the functions offered to passengers or drivers should not be interpreted as the same distribution.

The previous description explains that the user-responsive system leverages multiple specialized components. Uber focuses on the accuracy of the information reaching the driver, response time and compliance with its own rules. It also aims to reduce travel request transactions with voice features. These product examples show that the company isn’t just using OpenAI models in the employee chat window.

The process of evaluating the results in new employee distribution will still continue. Sukumar says they will keep track of what workflows are improving and how employees are taking advantage of the tool. At this stage, Uber does not announce a specific labor savings rate across the company. Giving access to approximately 30 thousand people does not mean that every employee will use the tool with the same intensity or that all work will be automated.
