Anthropic knocks on Samsung door for custom AI chip

Anthropic, special AI chip is in early stage talks with Samsung for its development plan. According to The Information, the company has not yet completed the design, but Samsung’s 2nm manufacturing process and advanced packaging capacity are among the main options on the table. The growing processing need of Claude models gives direct meaning to this conversation.

The company informed its existing partners that it will continue to use Amazon Trainium, Google TPU and Nvidia GPU in data center systems. However, Anthropic is looking for a way to provide more control on the custom hardware side. Reuters also wrote in April that Anthropic was considering the idea of designing its own chip.

On the Samsung side, the meeting carries a strong customer prospect for the Foundry business. While TSMC is experiencing capacity pressure with the intense demand for artificial intelligence chips, Samsung wants to offer alternative production options for different customers. According to TrendForce, not only production but also advanced packaging is gaining importance in the negotiations.

Anthropic’s move coincides with OpenAI’s work with Broadcom on the custom chip side. Large AI companies are looking to grow beyond just purchasing off-the-shelf GPUs. In addition, custom chip design gives more say over cost, access and performance.

Samsung offers new option for Anthropic with 2 nm production

There is no finalized production agreement between Anthropic and Samsung yet. Despite this, the meeting shows that artificial intelligence companies are considering new options on the table while maintaining existing partners such as Nvidia, Google and Amazon in chip supply. Anthropic will continue to use existing systems in the short term; The custom chip plan opens an additional channel to meet the company’s growing computing needs.
