Elon Musk has officially begun testifying in court in his lawsuit against OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and company president Greg Brockman. The case, which is being heard in the federal court in California and proceeding in front of a jury, pits the leading names of the artificial intelligence industry against each other. The case also brings to the agenda once again the debates about whether OpenAI has moved away from its founding purpose.
Musk was a part of OpenAI’s first founding team and invested approximately $38 million in the company’s early period. Despite this, they parted ways due to differences of opinion regarding the structure and direction of the company. It is stated that issues such as the integration of OpenAI with Tesla have created controversy. Musk later entered into direct competition in the industry by establishing his own artificial intelligence startup xAI.
Within the scope of the case, Musk is taking a more comprehensive initiative this time, after multiple lawsuits he previously filed against OpenAI, some of which were withdrawn or rejected. In addition to Altman and Brockman, Microsoft and OpenAI are among the defendants, and names such as Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati are expected to testify.
Elon Musk argues in court that OpenAI has deviated from its mission
At the heart of the case is the question of whether OpenAI has moved away from its goal of “developing artificial general intelligence that will benefit all humanity.” Musk argues that the company has violated this core mission by turning into a for-profit structure. In addition, allegations such as fraud, unfair gain and violation of the foundation structure are also included in the case file.
In his statements in court, Musk demanded that Altman and Brockman be removed from their positions and that OpenAI’s for-profit restructuring be reversed. In his statement, he emphasized that the company’s original charitable nature should be preserved.
It was noteworthy that Musk devoted extensive space to his personal history in his defense strategy. Detailing his life story from his childhood in South Africa to his arrival in Canada, Musk stated that the companies he founded focused on the benefit of humanity. He stated that SpaceX was founded as “an assurance for the continuation of humanity”, while Tesla emerged as a solution against the environmental effects of dependence on fossil fuels.
Stating that his concerns about artificial intelligence date back to his university years, Musk said that this technology has both great benefits and serious risks. He stated that artificial intelligence can either bring great prosperity or pose serious threats to humanity. In this context, he argued that the approach targeted in the establishment of OpenAI was critical.
On the other hand, Musk further harshened his accusations against Sam Altman, claiming that OpenAI was “stolen” as a charitable organization. He suggested that such a situation, if accepted by the court, could set a precedent for charities in the US and harm the donation system.
However, the information that most of the donations Musk made through his foundation was directed to areas directly or indirectly related to his own initiatives was not brought up during the court process. This detail continues to be a matter of debate in the public reflections of the case process.
