Leica introduced its new camera set called M Edition 70, produced in limited numbers to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the M3 model launched in 1954. This special set, produced in only 250 pieces, appeals only to collectors and dedicated Leica enthusiasts with a price tag of approximately 23 thousand dollars. Designed by Leica as a rare collection piece, this set is equipped with both nostalgic details and modern technical features in order to honor the seven-decade journey of the company’s M series. The complete set includes a platinum-coated Leica MA film camera, 50mm APO-Summicron-M f/2 lens, Leicavit quick winding mechanism and a metal film container containing black and white film.
The features of this limited edition set reflect the craftsmanship and aesthetics iconic to Leica’s M series. Platinum-plated camera and lens are not only visually striking, but also offer increased durability. In addition, the quick-winding mechanism called Leicavit allows users to advance films quickly, reminding once again of the important place of this classic accessory in Leica’s history. This mechanism, which was especially popular in the 1950s, allows the film to be fast-forwarded without removing the right hand from the shutter release, creating a nostalgic experience for old model Leica users.
The importance of the Leica M series in the world of photography
Leica’s M series developed a dedicated user base by offering high-quality manual photography from the 1950s onwards. The first model of this series, the M3, was recognized as a groundbreaking innovation by photographers around the world and was the device behind many iconic photographs. Although digitalization has been pursued over the years, Leica has continued to develop various models in the M series for users who want to keep traditional film photography alive. In 2014, it brought back the movie camera feeling by offering a rear screen-free experience for digital M series users with the M Edition 60. This new M Edition 70, introduced in 2024, brings the original feeling of the M3 model to collectors with a fully manual film camera.
In addition to the M Edition 70, Leica is enriching its 70th anniversary celebrations with new accessories and publications. For example, it was announced that the Leicavit movement will be reproduced with different coating options. The compatibility of this accessory with different analog M models is seen as a great innovation, especially for users who prefer to work with film cameras. Apart from this, the brand’s special Leica M book, which contains a 250-page history, will also be available in November. The book contains detailed information about the technical and aesthetic evolution of the Leica M series, archive documents and the experiences of various photographers.
On the other hand, the story of the M series from past to present will be presented to visitors with a special exhibition that will start on November 6 at Leica’s headquarters in Wetzlar, Germany. While the exhibition will show Leica’s cameras and accessories that have developed from its first models to today, it will also reveal what kind of mark the brand has left in the world of photography.
Although Leica aimed to appeal only to a limited number of collectors with this rare set, it managed to attract attention once again by combining the classic spirit of the M series with modern aesthetics.
