Strike decision in video game industry due to artificial intelligence

Voice and motion capture artists working in the video game industry have decided to strike after their demands for protections regarding the use of artificial intelligence were not met. The union representing the artists announced that negotiations with major video game companies have failed and therefore the strike will begin on Friday.

Artists’ reaction to the use of artificial intelligence

Concerns that AI technology will negatively impact artists’ work have long been a topic of discussion in the industry. Union officials say that companies’ uncontrolled increase in AI use threatens artists’ job security and rights. AI, especially used for voice-over and motion capture performances, has been criticized for concerns that it could replace artists. For this reason, artists are demanding that AI use be subject to certain regulations and that these regulations be included in contracts.

The strike decision was made as a result of a vote by the union. The artists stated that they made this decision because 18 months of negotiations had failed. Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) President Fran Drescher emphasized that the strike will continue until an agreement is reached that will prevent the misuse of artificial intelligence. The strike has had a huge impact across the industry and has put pressure on companies to change their approach.

Video game companies have reacted to the union’s decision to strike. In a statement made on behalf of the companies, it was stated that the current contract proposal includes historic wage increases and additional security measures. On the other hand, it was stated that there are also protective measures such as obtaining the approval of artists regarding the use of artificial intelligence and fair compensation. However, the union argues that these proposals are not enough and demands stronger and more comprehensive regulations.

It remains unclear how long the strike will last and how it will end. Artists continue to be determined to protect their rights and limit AI. Companies, on the other hand, argue that their current offers are sufficient and are ready to continue negotiations. During this process, developments in the sector will be closely monitored and the effects of the strike will be evaluated in the long term.

The video game industry is facing such conflicts at a time when AI technology is rapidly developing. The protection of artists’ rights and the demand for ethical use of technology will continue to be important agenda items in the industry. These developments have the potential to redefine the balance between AI and human labor.
