OpenAI announced its new initiative, ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, which aims to support academic research. The company plans to offer artificial intelligence models free of charge to a total of 100 thousand researchers, including scientists, mathematicians and engineers working at selected universities and research institutions. Participants accepted into the program will not only gain access to GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, one of OpenAI’s most current models, but will also be able to receive direct technical support from the company. In addition, each researcher will have the right to invite four colleagues from the same institution to the program. Thus, the aim is for research teams to benefit more comprehensively from artificial intelligence tools in joint projects.
The first phase of the program will start this summer with 10 thousand participants. OpenAI states that the scope will be gradually expanded and a total of 100 thousand researchers will be included in the program by 2027. The company states that this initiative is part of its commitment of over $250 million to support external scientific research and new discoveries until the end of 2027. In addition, OpenAI reminds us that the research community has long used AI tools in areas such as data analysis, literature review and preparation of grant applications. The new program brings this usage style to a more organized and institutional structure. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Edu service for educational institutions is based on a similar approach.
OpenAI expands use of AI in academic research
Providing free access to researchers brings different evaluations about the long-term effects of the program. Some comments suggest that this initiative could create new data sources for OpenAI. However, the company specifically emphasizes that under default settings, the data created by researchers will not be used in model training. This statement aims to reduce concerns about the confidentiality of academic studies and the protection of research data.

Prism, which is accessible to users with a ChatGPT account, offers various features that will make it easier to work on scientific articles and academic documents. In addition to bibliography verification, citation control and formatting processes, this tool also includes functions to speed up the preparation processes of researchers.
However, in the first demonstrations of Prism, capabilities for preparing lesson plans were also demonstrated. These features, which aim to facilitate the time-consuming administrative and education-oriented tasks of academics, can contribute to allocating more time to research activities. When evaluated together with the ChatGPT for Academic Researchers program, the scope of artificial intelligence solutions developed by OpenAI for universities and research institutions is further expanded.
