Popular iOS emulator Delta is getting a new feature. Delta developer Riley Testut has revealed that Delta will soon have online multiplayer support for Nintendo DS games. Testut’s post about the feature includes a video of a Mario Kart DS race being played on the emulator.
Nintendo shut down the DS’ online services in 2014, so we asked Testut how online multiplayer would work. “This service relies on melonDS’ online support and connects to third-party Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection servers like Kaeru, Wimmfi, AltWFC,” Testut told The Verge. That means over 10 million Delta users will be able to connect with both other Delta users and players using those servers on real devices using these third-party servers.
However, Testut added: “This is limited to Nintendo DS games only for now, but all Nintendo DS games with Nintendo WFC support are supported.” The Delta team doesn’t plan on hosting their own server, meaning the online multiplayer experience will be free for everyone.
Delta is rolling out Nintendo DS multiplayer support to Patreon subscribers first
You may have to wait a bit to try out the online multiplayer experience yourself. Testut noted that the feature will first be available in a beta for Patreon subscribers. “There’s no public release date yet,” Testut says. That may be disappointing, but in the meantime, you’ll have a chance to practice your Mario Kart DS skills.
