Apple seems to be making a significant change as it prepares its new Mac mini models with M4 processors, which it plans to release soon. According to information shared by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, USB-A ports will be completely removed in these new models. Apple plans to launch the M4 Mac mini in both standard and Pro versions. Both models will have more modern connection options instead of USB-A.
The removal of USB-A ports is part of a long-standing transformation of Apple’s hardware portfolio. Apple has previously followed a similar strategy on its MacBook and iPad models, switching to USB-C ports. Now the same change is coming to the Mac mini, the compact version of its desktops. This could increase the need for adapters for devices that use legacy ports, but it should also encourage the adoption of USB-C, which offers faster data transfers and multi-connectivity support.
What connectivity options will the M4 Mac Mini have?
According to Gurman, the Pro version of the M4 Mac mini will be equipped with five USB-C ports. In addition, the device will have an Ethernet port, HDMI output and headphone jack. These connection options will allow the device to support both modern usage scenarios and easily connect to various peripherals. It is estimated that the standard model will have similar connection options, but fewer ports will be offered numerically.
It is also stated that Apple will use an internal power supply in these new models. This may offer a structure that takes up less space in the Mac mini’s external design and a more organized cabling. Despite the design changes, Apple’s compact and minimalist design approach will continue.
The release schedule for the M4 Mac mini models is also starting to become clear. According to Gurman, the standard version is scheduled to start shipping to warehouses in September, and the Pro version in October. This means that users will be able to get their hands on the new models towards the end of the year. Apple is expected to share more technical details and promotional materials in the meantime.
Apple’s plans for a new Magic Keyboard
The same report also suggests that Apple is working on a lower-cost Magic Keyboard, which will be designed specifically for the entry-level iPad and iPad Air models. The company introduced a new Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro this year, but the new accessory will reportedly be a more affordable version, slated for release in mid-2025.
The M4 Mac mini’s complete abandonment of USB-A ports is the latest in Apple’s rapid move away from old standards and into new technology. The company is completing the transition from its Mac computer line to its own-designed processors while also completely erasing all traces of old technology from its products.
