Apple’s new camera plan has been revealed: 200 MP sensor is being tested

New claims have come to the fore that Apple may switch to high-resolution camera sensors in iPhone models. While Android manufacturers have been using sensors with 200 megapixel resolution in their devices for a long time, there has been no concrete step in this direction on the Apple side. Despite this, recent leaks show that the company is working on a significant change on the camera hardware side. According to information based on the supply chain, Apple is actively testing a 200 MP resolution sensor for a future iPhone model. This development reveals that the company is looking for a different balance in photo and video performance.

According to the information shared by Digital Chat Station, which is known for its leaks, the size of the sensor evaluated by Apple is 1/1.12 inches. This size can offer significant advantages in terms of light collection capacity in mobile photography. In addition, it is stated that the sensor in question was tested only for the main camera instead of the telephoto camera. This detail indicates that Apple is considering extending its high-resolution approach not only to zoom performance but also to overall photo quality. Although it is not guaranteed that hardware in the testing phase will directly translate into the final product, such studies are considered remarkable in terms of understanding the company’s long-term plans.

Apple can close the gap between iPhone and Android flagships

On the Android side, especially Samsung, Xiaomi and other manufacturers have been using 200 MP sensors in their flagship models for a while. Despite this, Apple chose to focus on software optimization with sensors with lower megapixel values. However, increasing competition in mobile photography causes hardware elements such as sensor size and resolution to come to the fore again. In this context, Apple’s testing of new sensors is considered a development compatible with the general trend in the industry.

On the other hand, similar sensors are expected to be available earlier on the Android front. It is said that the Find X9 Ultra model that Oppo is working on will include a dual 200 MP camera system. In addition, it has been confirmed that the vivo X300 Ultra model will come with two 200 MP sensors, one for the main camera and the other for periscope telephoto. It is stated that new generation sensors developed by Sony and Samsung will be used in these devices. Despite this, it is not yet clear when Apple will offer this technology to consumers.

According to the information contained in the leaks, the tested sensor is expected to be commercially ready next year. However, this does not mean that the next iPhone model will definitely have a 200 MP camera. It is known that Apple generally puts new hardware through long testing processes and prioritizes software compatibility. However, the combination of high-resolution sensors with more advanced artificial intelligence-supported image processing techniques may produce different results in mobile photography.

In addition to all this, it is known that Apple focuses not only on megapixel increase in camera systems, but also on areas such as sensor size, dynamic range and video performance. Therefore, even if a 200 MP sensor is used, it is predicted that the final user experience will not be limited only to the increase in resolution.
