Apple suspends news and entertainment feed summaries

Apple has temporarily suspended Apple Intelligence-generated news and entertainment feeds with developer preview versions of iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3. The company announced that it has stopped the distribution of summarized notifications in order to make improvements on this system.

With the update, a new informational text that users encounter when they activate notification summaries for the first time is also noteworthy. This statement states that notification summaries are in beta and may produce unexpected results. In addition, with the new beta versions, users will be able to choose which applications they want to receive notification summary from the lock screen. In addition, italic font is used to make it easier to distinguish summary notifications created by artificial intelligence from plain text notifications.

In the statement made by Apple last week, it was stated that it was working to improve notification summaries. The company said, “Apple Intelligence features are in beta and are constantly being improved with user feedback. A software update coming in the coming weeks will make it more clear that the text displayed is summarized by Apple Intelligence. “We encourage users to report an unexpected notification summary if they see it.”

Notification summaries are among the first features of Apple Intelligence introduced in iOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1. However, this feature received various criticisms immediately after it was released to general users. The BBC in particular has published a number of reports that these summaries are spreading misinformation. One of the most notable examples involved a false report that Luigi Mangione, who allegedly killed United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had committed suicide.

Apple took negative feedback into account

Following this negative feedback, Apple accelerated its efforts to make improvements on notification summaries. The changes are aimed to make the user experience more reliable and reduce misinformation problems. More clearly stating that summaries are in beta and taking user feedback into account shows that Apple is taking a more transparent approach to this feature.
