Notion announced that it has come to the end of the road for its AI-powered email client Notion Mail. According to the company’s announcement, the service will be completely retired on September 22, 2026. Thus, the project, which aims to bring Gmail together with Notion’s database-oriented working approach, will have completed its approximately two-year adventure. Those who use the service must export the personalized data linked to their accounts before this date.
When Notion Mail was first announced, it attracted attention with its aim of offering a different experience from traditional email clients. The app went beyond the classic inbox concept, allowing users to organize their emails under custom views. While different workflows could be created with the help of filters and groups, the artificial intelligence-supported labeling system allowed e-mails to be classified more easily. In addition, reusable text templates, the ability to schedule meetings without leaving the application, and a working layout similar to Notion were among the main features that differentiated the service from the standard Gmail experience.
Notion Mail never achieved expected platform support
However, the usage area of the service did not expand to the expected extent over time. One of the most important reasons for this was limited platform support. Notion Mail only worked with Gmail and Google Workspace accounts. Although the expectation of support for people using Microsoft Outlook, iCloud and other popular email providers continues for a long time, there has been no expansion in this direction. In addition, the fact that the Windows application was not available for a long time made it difficult for the product to become a strong alternative on different platforms.
Details about the closure process are also shared on the company’s updated support page. Notion Mail users are advised to export the data they need before the service ends. Because customized inbox views, artificial intelligence-generated labels, saved text templates, and notification preferences are tied to the Notion Mail account, this data will become inaccessible when the service is turned off. Despite this, it is not possible to delete e-mail contents.
This is because Notion Mail works through real-time synchronization with Gmail from the beginning. Users’ email messages will continue to be stored in their Google accounts and will remain accessible through Gmail. The part that will disappear will be the advanced organization and productivity features that Notion adds to Gmail. The company recommends that users switch to Gmail or another email client of their choice before the last day.
In recent years, Notion has been focusing more on artificial intelligence features and improvements to its workspace platform. The company continues to regularly update its products such as Notion AI, calendar service Notion Calendar, and document management tools. On the other hand, Notion Mail’s failure to reach the expected user base and being limited only to the Google ecosystem seems to have negatively affected the sustainability of the service.
Closing Notion Mail does not mean that email messages will disappear. However, all app-specific customization options and productivity tools will be unavailable as of September 22, 2026. Those who actively use the service must complete the necessary export processes and move their daily email usage to a different client to prevent possible data loss.
