Bluesky quietly doubles photo quality

Bluesky has improved the photo sharing experience with the new update to its mobile application. With version 1.121, the platform allows users to share higher quality content by increasing both the upload size and viewing resolution of images. The update aims to offer more flexible use, especially for users who produce visual content.

Previously, photos shared on Bluesky were limited to 1 MB. With the new version, this limit has been increased to 2 MB. In addition, the maximum resolution of the images was doubled and reached 4000 pixels from 2000 pixels. While this change makes photos look clearer and more detailed within the application, it means a noticeable improvement, especially for users who take high-resolution shots.

There are also notable innovations on the visual presentation side of the platform. Bluesky removed the previously used fixed grid layout and replaced it with a scrollable gallery structure. This new structure allows images with different aspect ratios to be displayed together without cropping. Thus, users can share their photos more authentically and the integrity of the content is preserved.

Bluesky aims to increase competition in terms of visual experience

However, user feedback started to come in about the new gallery structure. Some users want the classic grid view to be preferred as well as the scrollable gallery option. This indicates that Bluesky may offer more customization options in future updates.

The changes have the potential to put Bluesky in a more competitive position with rivals such as X and Meta’s Threads platform. Threads, in particular, attracted attention in photo sharing with its support for different aspect ratios and scrollable gallery structure. These features even paved the way for the development of third-party applications so that users can share their panoramic photos more effectively.

Despite this, there is no official limit on the maximum image size supported by Threads, and it is known that it still offers a wider capacity in this area. Still, this step taken by Bluesky enables the platform to become more assertive on the visual content side. The improvements that come with the update strengthen the overall usage experience of the application and offer a more balanced and functional structure, especially for users who prioritize photo sharing.
