A new patent has emerged showing that Samsung is working on a three-layer foldable phone. This design, called “Samsung Galaxy Z Tri-Fold Wide”, carries the company’s current foldable phone concept to a larger screen format. The first details show that the device is positioned at a different point not only in terms of form factor but also in terms of usage scenarios. This approach reveals that Samsung is considering more advanced options in the foldable device category.
According to the patent documents, the device offers a structure consisting of two hinges and three separate panels. When fully opened, it looks more like a compact tablet than a classic smartphone. This means a larger work area, especially in productivity-oriented use. Compared to the experience offered in the current Galaxy Z Fold series, a wider and horizontal usage area is aimed here.
Although the body of the device has a thicker structure when folded, there is a usable screen on the outside. This screen can be used for daily operations as the cover screen. It is seen that the triple camera setup is positioned on the back surface. This entire structure is complemented by a more robust frame to support the long-term durability of the two-hinged system. This suggests that a serious balance has been observed on the engineering side of the device.
Three-layer design can offer different usage scenarios
One of the prominent details in the patent drawings is the usage method that can be described as “tent mode”. The device can be positioned to stand on its own in a triangular form. This structure makes it possible to perform operations such as watching videos, following notifications or viewing widgets hands-free. It is also among the possible scenarios that it can be used as a second screen on the table.
In addition, the space offered by the large screen can make multitasking more practical. A more suitable basis may be created for operations such as running multiple applications side by side at the same time or content production. However, it should not be ignored that such a form factor raises some questions in terms of daily portability and ergonomics.
It is known that patents do not always translate into final products. Similarly, Samsung has not documented and commercialized many concepts to date. In the short term, it seems more likely that the company’s focus will be on models such as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and its larger-screen variant. For this reason, it is not considered an expected development that the three-storey widescreen model will be available for sale in the near future.
On the other hand, rival manufacturers have started to announce three-layer foldable devices, increasing the competitive pressure on Samsung. This may cause the company to make different design options more concrete. The approach seen in the patent suggests that Samsung’s foldable device roadmap could include a wider variety of form factors in the long term. The strengths of this design as well as the difficulties it may create in practical use will be decisive in the steps to be taken in the future.
