Claude’s new watermark system sparked controversy among users

Anthropic began using invisible signs that allowed machines to understand that the content created by Claude was the product of artificial intelligence. This approach, which the company adopted in order to comply with the transparency rules under the European Union Artificial Intelligence Law, was met with different reactions among Claude users. Some people, especially those who use texts from Claude in business, education or publishing activities, worry that the invisible signs could later reveal the use of artificial intelligence. On the other hand, other users find it reasonable for transparency to ensure that content created by artificial intelligence is detectable. Thus, the center of the debate is less about the technical structure of the watermark and more about the conditions under which Claude’s output can be considered a user’s work.

One of the platforms where discussions intensified was Reddit. A user named Visionode argued that the new system could put ordinary people who use Claude on a limited basis in a difficult situation. According to the user, people more experienced with artificial intelligence tools may try to eliminate possible marks by rephrasing the text or passing it through different services, while other users may not have such an opportunity. Examples include the student who gets help from Claude to edit a paragraph, the journalist who summarizes a long transcript, or the writer who searches for synonyms when having writing difficulties. This approach also raises the question of where to draw the line between using AI as an auxiliary tool and directly delivering AI output.

Claude watermark system expands debate on transparency in artificial intelligence use

However, the same examples were found unconvincing by other users on Reddit. In particular, there is a distinct difference between a summary prepared by Claude being transcribed into the news text as is by the journalist, and the use of the summary solely to facilitate review of the source material. Similarly, a student receiving editing suggestions for a paragraph he or she wrote is not the same usage when Claude pastes the text he created directly into his assignment. The basic approach of those who support the watermark application focuses on this distinction. According to this view, the detectability of the AI output is intended to provide additional information about how the content was produced, rather than Claude laying claim to the text.

Another Reddit user called the practice “unethical,” noting that while working with Claude, he provided instructions, context, decisions, and numerous corrections. According to this view, Claude is merely a tool that facilitates the production process, and the presence of an invisible sign on the resulting text or code raises the question to what extent the tool intervenes in the user’s labor. Users who opposed this emphasized that the watermark is not a claim of ownership or copyright. According to them, the aim is to make it easier to identify artificial intelligence-generated content that may pose risks in various areas of use. While it was seen that the discussion shifted to a sarcastic tone from time to time, some users suggested that even those who objected to the watermark may have benefited from Claude when preparing their criticisms.

Another part of the criticism is based on broader debates about training data for generative AI models. One Reddit user said he found it ironic that AI-generated work was watermarked, even though he stated that he did not use Claude to print text. The basis for this view is that advanced AI models have been trained with huge amounts of human-generated content. Therefore, some users find it problematic that systems that learn from human content then mark the texts they produce in a machine-recognizable way. However, technical signals indicating the source of the output created by an artificial intelligence system with the use of training data are considered to be different issues from a legal and technical perspective.

Users who support watermarking think that the system can be useful, especially in cases where artificial intelligence-generated content is presented as if it were prepared by humans. Since educational institutions, broadcasting organizations and companies have different policies regarding the use of artificial intelligence, merely determining that a content was prepared with Claude does not by itself indicate that abuse has occurred. For example, one organization may allow its employees to use artificial intelligence-supported writing tools, while another organization may require this to be disclosed in certain documents. Similarly, in the field of education, different rules can be applied between language correction, idea development and direct assignment production. Therefore, how the technical detection mechanism is interpreted becomes at least as decisive as the presence of the watermark as the watermark itself.

For Anthropic, behind the application are the transparency expectations brought about by artificial intelligence regulations in Europe. Identifying certain content produced or modified by artificial intelligence in a machine-understandable way aligns with regulators’ approach to tracking the source of synthetic content. Despite this, technical questions such as how durable invisible marking methods are and whether the marks will be preserved if the text is rewritten or processed with other tools remain important. If a system can be easily bypassed, its ability to prevent abuse may be limited; A system that is too rigid could lead to misjudgments of people who legitimately use AI as a helpful tool. The debate around Claude also shows that watermarking alone is not a sufficient solution, and that institutions need to establish clear rules and evaluation criteria for the use of artificial intelligence.
