Revenue sharing debate in X escalated, Musk put the brakes on

Social media platform The company recently announced that in the payments to be made to content creators, more emphasis will be given to the interactions of the posts, especially in the region where the creator is located. Despite this, the approach in question received intense criticism from content producers that appeal to a global user base. As the reactions from X users grew rapidly, Elon Musk stated that the change would be re-evaluated before being implemented.

In the first statement made by X’s Head of Product Nikita Bier, it was stated that the new system aims to prevent manipulation of the algorithm. Accordingly, if some content producers produced content for highly interactive markets such as the USA or Japan in order to reach larger audiences, it would be considered a negative behavior by the system. In addition, it was emphasized that the platform wants to strengthen local communities and ensure that users encounter more meaningful content in their own regions. However, this approach has been criticized on the grounds that it poses a risk of loss of income, especially for content producers operating in small markets.

Elon Musk took into account the reaction of X users

The planned change is seen as a continuation of the steps X has recently taken to increase the reliability of information on the platform. In November, the company added a new field to user profiles showing which country or region the accounts are managed from. The aim of this application was to more easily identify fake accounts and actors who spread false information, especially in political content. However, the new revenue model similarly aimed to limit content producers from taking advantage of the system by producing content about certain regions.

Although this approach had the potential to reduce certain manipulations, the scope of its application was not limited to political content. Users who produce content in areas of global interest such as sports, technology, fashion and cinema were also likely to be affected by this change. Despite this, many users stated that they followed a growth strategy by appealing to different audiences in different languages. For this reason, opinions came to the fore that the proposed system could limit content diversity and harm the global structure of the platform.

On the other hand, Elon Musk announced that they stopped the implementation of the change in response to the reactions. This statement once again revealed the impact of user feedback on platform policies. In addition, it is known that X has recently developed different methods for content control. The company began to impose sanctions, such as a 90-day income cut, against accounts that shared misleading war content produced with artificial intelligence.

In recent weeks, reports have attracted attention that artificial intelligence-supported false content is rapidly spreading on the platform, especially during geopolitical developments. In an analysis published by Wired, it was stated that some users shared video game images as real battle scenes and this reached large audiences. Despite all this, it seems that X’s quest to balance the creator ecosystem continues. The platform is expected to evaluate different options to reshape both its revenue sharing model and content security.
