The legal tension between Reddit and the artificial intelligence company Anthropic is climbing. The case, which was brought to the court in San Francisco, is based on unauthorized access since July 2024, according to Reddit’s claim. Reddit argues that Anthropic has reached its own platform through the boat more than 100 thousand times and that these access explicitly violates the rules. The platform says that these access took place at a time when Anthropic claimed to have stopped access before.
In the documents he submitted to the court, Reddit describes Anthropic as a seemingly virtuous but indeed company. It is emphasized that the company has given messages of honesty and transparency against the outside, but does not comply with them on its inner face. In Reddit’s statements, it is stated that this situation creates an ethical contradiction and ignores the boundaries to increase Anthropic’s earnings.
Reddit attracts the attention of AI models with its human -centered content
Reddit’s chief of law, Ben Lee, told The Verge that such unauthorized data uses can reach billion dollars for the material equivalent. According to Lee, the content offered by Reddit has a unique value for artificial intelligence models. Because, Reddit is home to natural, sincere and human -centered debates among users in numerous issues for about twenty years. It is noted that these contents are widely used in language model education.
Reddit signed a content sharing agreement with Google in February 2024. Bloomberg reported that this agreement has made an annual income of approximately 60 million dollars. The Reddit side emphasizes that the content it has licensed by legal means is commercially valuable, while unauthorized use is out of this balance. Anthropic is claimed to continue to attract data from the platform independent of these agreements.
The Anthropic Front has not made a statement about the case so far. The company, known for its chat boat, has received major technology investments in recent years. Anthropic, which is among the investors of Amazon, has become one of the most remarkable initiatives in the field of artificial intelligence. However, the fact that the company frequently comes to the agenda with allegations of copyright violations makes its relationship with ethical limits controversial.
Last year, Anthropic was the target of similar charges. In August 2023, three writers filed a collective lawsuit on the grounds that hundreds of thousands of copyright books were used without permission. In this case, it was suggested that the company created billions of dollars with the data obtained from the books. In October 2023, Universal Music filed another lawsuit against Anthropic because of the systematic copy of his lyrics.
In addition, copyright -based cases against artificial intelligence companies are increasing. OpenAI faces both the lawsuit filed by the New York Times and the collective lawsuit processes including writers such as George RR Martin. However, another chain of lawsuit continues, including press organs such as the New York Daily News and Chicago Tribune. Other artificial intelligence companies such as Cohere are at the target of media giants such as Condé Nast and Vox Media.
