Microsoft quietly extends Windows 10 support for another year

Microsoft has extended the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for Windows 10 users for another year. Thus, security updates for the operating system will continue to be available until October 12, 2027, instead of the previously planned October 13, 2026. Instead of sharing this change with a wide-scale announcement, the company silently updated it on its support pages. This development means an additional transition period for users who do not prefer to switch to Windows 11.

Although official support for Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025, Microsoft launched the Extended Security Updates program for users who need security updates. The program allows individual users to continue receiving security updates under certain conditions if they sign in with a Microsoft account. In addition, paid ESU options are also offered for corporate customers. Thus, even if the support period has ended, protection against critical security vulnerabilities continues for a certain period of time.

Transition period for Windows 10 users extended by another year

Microsoft has taken several steps to accelerate the adoption of Windows 11 in recent years. Despite this, many computers cannot be officially upgraded to Windows 11 due to hardware requirements, especially TPM 2.0 and new generation processor requirements. In addition, there is a significant number of users who continue to use Windows 10 despite having compatible hardware. The extension of the ESU program will allow these users to continue using their existing systems without being deprived of security updates.

However, this extension does not mean that Windows 10 will continue to be fully supported. Microsoft will only provide updates to fix security vulnerabilities. New features, functional improvements or comprehensive platform innovations will continue to be exclusive to Windows 11. The company’s long-term goal has not changed and Windows 11 is again the focus of new developments.

On the other hand, there is no statement as to whether Microsoft will carry the ESU program to after 2027. Whether or not the support period will be extended again may depend on the prevalence rate of Windows 11 and the usage share of Windows 10 in the coming period. The decision taken for now offers the opportunity to benefit from security updates for another year for users who do not want to leave Windows 10 or cannot switch yet. While this will extend the lifespan of computers, especially those with old hardware, it will also help users make their transition plans more flexibly.
