Microsoft Bing Visual Creator downgraded due to quality complaints

Microsoft is withdrawing the latest model update of its AI-powered Bing Visual Creator. According to TechCrunch, after the transition to the DALL-E 3 model on December 18, users made complaints stating that the vehicle did not meet the expected quality. These complaints triggered Microsoft’s decision to revert to an older model.

The company refrained from making any official statement regarding this return decision or providing details on the reasons for the difference between users’ expectations and the results. However, Microsoft Search Department President Jordi Ribas announced on Twitter that they were able to reproduce some problems and therefore will switch to an older DALL-E version. Ribas stated that the transition process could take several weeks.

Immediately after the upgrade to the DALL-E 3 model, users complained that Bing Visual Creator produced results that were less detailed and did not comply with the instructions compared to the previous version. Although Jordi Ribas’ initial statements stated that the new model provided “better results on average”, user feedback did not support this claim.

Similar complaints were voiced on Reddit and OpenAI community forums. In particular, low visual details, excessive use of lighting effects and deficiencies in the rendering of certain objects attracted attention. For example, one user noted that the fabric details on an anime-style character’s outfit were not accurately reflected. Another user shared that he was unhappy with the way Bing placed the starburst effects.

Microsoft may improve Bing Visual Composer with feedback

All this feedback is largely based on subjective evaluations. But this shows that Microsoft has to deal not only with complaints about technical bugs or feature changes, but also with users’ expectations of visual production. Users criticize the AI’s output by comparing it with the results they imagined.

At this point, Microsoft may need to develop strategies to better manage user expectations by benefiting from the opinions of the artists on whom the artificial intelligence is trained. Taking this feedback into account and making new improvements can help Bing Visual Composer improve the user experience again.
