Meta has also launched Vibes, an artificial intelligence-focused short video platform that it tried in the USA, in Europe. This new feature works through the Meta AI application and offers a stream consisting only of videos produced by artificial intelligence. Although it provides users with an experience similar to TikTok or Reels, the fact that all the content is created with artificial intelligence puts the platform in a different position. The first version of the platform was made available in the USA about six weeks ago. Now users in Europe have the opportunity to participate in this experience.
This expansion once again shows that Meta has recently focused more on social media experiences with artificial intelligence content. Through Vibes, users can create short videos with text commands and share these videos with their friends or followers. Users can not only produce their own content, but also create different versions by “remixing” other people’s videos. In addition, it becomes possible to add music, effects and visual layers to the content. In this respect, Vibes progresses in a structure that encourages creativity. Despite all this, the fact that all the content is produced by artificial intelligence makes us rethink the concept of originality.
Vibes content can also be shared on other Meta platforms
Meta states that the platform will personalize over time according to the user’s viewing habits. A user-specific flow emerges based on the videos watched, interactions given and shares made. However, the contents don’t just stay within Vibes; It can also be shared via Instagram and Facebook. Users can directly convert these videos into stories or Reels content and disseminate them on different social media channels. This integration fits into Meta’s long-term plans to increase permeability between its platforms. Although this increases the diversity of sharing, the dominance of artificial content on social media raises some questions.
Content creation is extremely simplified on Vibes. The user can start the video creation process by simply typing a few words of command. The system is then guided by details such as suggested style, emotion or environment. Thus, interesting videos can be produced within minutes. In addition, this structure, which allows anyone to produce content regardless of their experience level, increases creative diversity. However, all these conveniences bring with them different discussions in terms of content quality.
In recent months, Meta has made statements emphasizing “original storytelling” and stated that superficial short videos will be highlighted less by the algorithm. Following these statements, the announcement of Vibes, which consists only of artificial intelligence-generated content, creates a striking contradiction. Despite this, Meta claims that Vibes has increased in-app media production tenfold and users are quickly adapting to this new content. This increase in usage rates shows that the platform has been adopted by users. However, content quality as well as user interest continues to be debated. Because the difference between interesting content and quality content may not always be clear.
Some platforms, such as YouTube, have begun to monitor artificial intelligence-generated content with stricter rules. On the other hand, Meta prefers to adopt a more liberal and user-centered approach in this regard. The existence of Vibes reflects Meta’s desire to make this technology more accessible and part of everyday use. Although this approach seems innovative, how accurately the algorithms identify artificial ingredients is still open to debate. Distinguishing quality in the abundance of content can be difficult for both the user and the platform.
The remix feature on the platform increases content-based interaction among users. The ability to interpret a video in different ways creates awareness of co-production among viewers. This changes the classic audience-speaker balance and makes the social media experience more participatory.
