Meta begins layoffs in various units, including WhatsApp and Instagram

Meta; It started layoffs in different departments such as WhatsApp, Instagram and Reality Labs. Rather than a large-scale company-wide layoff, these small-scale cuts appear to be in line with the restructuring of specific teams.

Some Meta employees started to share on social media that they were dismissed. One of these names was Jane Manchun Wong, who was known for reporting on previously unannounced features added to applications and joined Meta’s Threads team in 2023.

“Today, several teams at Meta are realigning their resources to align with long-term strategic goals and location strategies,” Meta spokesperson Dave Arnold told The Verge. This process involves moving some teams to different locations and moving some employees into different roles. “In cases where a position is eliminated, we work hard to find other opportunities for affected employees.”

Meta laid off 11 thousand people in 2022 and 10 thousand people in 2023

This latest wave of layoffs follows smaller layoffs at the company’s Reality Labs division earlier in the year. Meta first laid off 11 thousand employees in 2022, following extreme optimism about post-pandemic growth. In 2023, a new layoff of 10 thousand people was announced as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s “productivity year”.

Meta’s layoffs are aimed at making the company’s operations more efficient and supporting its long-term strategies. Increasing competition and cost management strategies, especially in the technology sector, make such decisions mandatory.

Following the difficulties experienced in post-pandemic growth, Meta aims to adopt a more focused structure in line with the company’s future goals while continuing to shrink its workforce. Departments such as Reality Labs are seen as critical areas where investments continue, especially in new generation technologies such as virtual and augmented reality. However, it is understood that the restructuring processes will continue so that the company can work more efficiently in these areas.

All these developments are considered as part of the steps taken by Meta to adapt to its long-term strategic plans and optimize its resources accordingly.
