LineageOS can now be installed via the browser, preparations for Android 17 have begun

In its summer development announcement, the LineageOS team shared many innovations that make the platform easier to use. The announced changes include the new installation tool that works via the browser, the Updater application with the Material 3 design, official support for more devices, and the start of the development process of the Android 17-based LineageOS 24 version. The team, which recently criticized Google’s changes to the sideloading process on Android, this time announced innovations that focus directly on improving the user experience.

One of the highlights of the new announcement was the new tool that now allows LineageOS to be installed via the web browser. This system, which can be accessed via the project’s download page; Fastboot supports ADB and the Odin protocol used on Samsung devices. However, the developers underline that this solution does not completely replace the existing installation method. Since each device has its own installation steps, users must follow the instructions on the official LineageOS Wiki page. Thus, the browser-based tool makes the installation process more accessible while device-specific requirements continue to be preserved.

LineageOS update system and applications have been renewed

LineageOS’ built-in Updater app has also undergone a major revamp. The new interface, prepared with the Material 3 Expressive design approach, offers a more modern appearance and also includes some remarkable functional innovations. The most important of these is the ability to view which Android Security Bulletin (ASB) level the update to be installed contains before installation. This way, users can see which security patches will come to their devices before the update process starts. Additionally, A/B OTA update packages are now installed via streaming by default. This approach reduces the need for storage space during the update and contributes to a more efficient completion of the installation process.

On the software side, the LineageOS team states that it has adapted to the new security patch model adopted by Google with Android 16. Accordingly, most of the security fixes are now released in quarterly packages. However, the project team states that it will continue to test and integrate monthly security patches for existing LineageOS versions into the system. In addition, security fixes deemed appropriate will be carried back to older LineageOS versions. Thus, not only current devices, but also older models with ongoing official support can be kept as up-to-date as possible in terms of security.

In the statement regarding future plans, it was confirmed that the LineageOS 24 development process officially started after the release of Android 17. The developers have not yet shared a release schedule for the new version. Despite this, it is stated that the work is progressing as planned. Considering that significant changes are made to hardware compatibility, security mechanisms and system components with each new version of Android, the LineageOS team is expected to conduct a comprehensive compatibility process to make the new version stable.

In addition, some applications offered with LineageOS also gained new features. The default Gallery app now supports Motion Photos. While the forward or rewind function has been added by double-tapping on the video playback side, it also becomes possible to continue interrupted videos from where they left off. The Seedvault backup app, Etar Calendar, and Twelve music player have also received updates containing various bug fixes and improvements.

Another important topic of the announcement was the expansion of official device support. New models from different manufacturers, especially Samsung, Motorola, Sony and Xiaomi, have been added to the supported device list of LineageOS. LineageOS has been among the projects that have stood out for many years as it offers a more up-to-date software experience to devices whose official Android update support has ended. Thanks to expanded device support, more users will have the opportunity to access current Android features and regular security updates. When the installation support via the browser, the renewed update infrastructure and the preparations for the new version based on Android 17 are evaluated together, it seems that the project aims to make the installation and update processes more practical for both new users and the existing LineageOS community.
