Google continues to improve RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging capabilities for Android devices. The company announced on Thursday that it is rolling out the ability to edit RCS messages. This feature is on the same level as the message editing feature that Apple added to iMessage two years ago.
The new message editing feature gives users 15 minutes to edit a message in the Google Messages app. During this time, to edit the message, it is enough to open a text box by pressing and holding the message. This way, you can correct spelling errors or add additional clarity to your message.
RCS messaging capabilities aim to reduce the difference in messaging experience between iOS and Android devices. Apple announced that it will offer RCS support in the Messages application as of 2024. In this way, iPhone owners will have features such as typing notifications, read receipts and high-resolution media sharing when messaging with Android users.
Although Apple has not given a clear date yet, RCS support is expected to come with iOS 18. These innovations are planned to be introduced in the opening speech to be held at WWDC 2024. The new features are expected to be available in the fall.
Other Android innovations from Google
Google is also introducing other new features for Android users. Chromebook or Android tablet owners will soon get the Instant Hotspot feature. This feature allows devices to connect to phone hotspots with a single touch, thus eliminating the need to enter a password.
Google Meet offers a feature that will allow users to easily switch between devices during the call. You can switch between Android phone, tablet or web browser by tapping the Cast icon in the application. This feature is very practical for users who want to change location during a video call.
Android makes smart home controls even easier. The new Google Home Favorites widget gives you one-touch access to room temperatures or lighting controls. This widget offers a more intuitive use than the lock screen shortcut in Android 13 and is available for trial in the public preview version.
Wear OS is also being updated with the Google Home Favorites component and shortcut that will allow you to control your smart home from your wrist. These features allow users to control smart home devices directly from their watches.
Google is adding new combinations for Emoji Kitchen. This creative feature allows you to combine two emojis on Gboard to create fun stickers that you can send to your friends. The company stated that the disco ball and headset combination is among the new options.
Android updates are not limited to these. PayPal can now be used on Wear OS watches via Google Wallet. Additionally, Android's digital car keys have become available on some Mini models and will soon be available for “select Mercedes-Benz and Polestar vehicles.”
With these innovations, Android further enriches the user experience and takes important steps in its competition with iOS. These developments in the world of technology continue to make users' lives easier. Closing the gap in messaging experience between Android and iOS offers a more integrated and compatible communication experience for users.
