iOS 18 brings ability to recover lost photos and videos to Photos app

Apple is preparing to introduce a significant innovation to the Photos app with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. This new feature will make it possible to recover lost or damaged photos and videos. This innovation, which allows users to recover lost content on their devices, is considered a big step, especially in terms of preserving precious memories.

Recover lost photos and videos with the “Recoveries” album in the Photos app

The new Photos app includes a “Recoveries” album that can detect photos and videos that have been lost on a device. This album is located in the “Tools” section of the Photos app and is only visible when lost content is found on the device. Once users see the Recoveries album, they can either permanently delete the content in the album or restore it to the Photos Library.

There are various reasons why photos and videos can be lost. These include database corruption issues, images taken with the camera but not saved correctly, or third-party apps accessing the Photo Library. To overcome these issues, Apple offers users the ability to recover lost photos and videos. Here are the steps to follow to recover a lost image or video:

  1. Photos Open the app and Albums Go to the tab.
  2. Vehicles Go down to the section and The Rescued Select the album.
  3. Tap a photo or video in the album, or use the Select option to select multiple items.
  4. Delete Permanently or Restore to Archive select one of the options.

Users who upgrade their devices to iOS 18, iPadOS 18 or macOS Sequoia will experience a system that automatically scans for lost photos and videos and provides quick access to recoverable content. The Recovered album will only appear if there is lost content on the device. If there is no such content, the album will not appear.

Some update issues in the past caused users to re-appear photos that they had deleted a long time ago. These issues were mainly caused by database corruption. Apple has taken important steps to prevent such issues from happening again with iOS 18. The Recovered album feature will both allow users to access lost content and prevent similar issues.

iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia betas are now available to developers and public beta testers. These new software updates will be available to the general public in fall 2024. With these updates, Apple users will be able to safely recover their lost memories by taking advantage of the improvements in the Photos app.
