Honda announced that it will expand its cooperation with Google and make the Google Gemini artificial intelligence assistant available in more vehicles. While the new system replaces the previously used Google Assistant, it aims to offer drivers a more fluid usage experience with natural speech capabilities and advanced artificial intelligence features. However, the company limits this innovation to only models with the necessary equipment. For this reason, some entry-level Honda models will not be able to benefit from the new artificial intelligence platform.
Unlike traditional voice command systems, Google Gemini does not require speaking in certain patterns. While drivers can convey their requests in colloquial language, the system can also preserve the context of the conversation. For example, when traffic is heavy and the conversation is interrupted and the same topic is returned a few minutes later, artificial intelligence can remember the previous conversation and continue where it left off. The platform tries to interpret voice requests more accurately by learning user habits over time.
The ability of drivers to perform operations without taking their attention off the road is among the prominent features of the system. Gemini can summarize current news, offer restaurant recommendations in the immediate area, or prepare routes and plans for weekend trips. In addition, it can also support productivity-oriented tasks such as generating ideas for upcoming business meetings. Thus, it is aimed to reduce distraction while driving while reducing the need to interact with touch screens for a long time.
Google Gemini only available on select Honda models
The most striking limitation of the new system emerges on the hardware side. Google Gemini only works on vehicles that support the “Google built-in” infrastructure. For this reason, Honda’s more affordable entry-level models are excluded from the update. Honda National Auto Sales Vice President Jessika Laudermilk stated that connected technologies have now become one of the indispensable elements of the modern automobile experience, and that the company considers this integration as a solution that facilitates drivers’ access to information during the journey and supports productivity.
This is especially evident in the Civic family. Among the five different hardware options of the Civic Sedan offered for sale in the USA, the three most affordable versions do not offer Google Gemini support. Users who want to benefit from artificial intelligence features should choose the Civic Si model, which has a starting price of at least $ 31,495. Another option is the Civic Sport Touring Hybrid, which starts at $32,395. Thus, access to new technologies is limited to users who prefer higher hardware levels.
On the other hand, Honda’s electric and hybrid models have a different picture. Google Gemini is offered as standard in all trim levels of the Honda Prologue, whose production has recently ended. It is stated that the artificial intelligence platform will be included in all versions of the electric-assisted Honda Prelude coupe model, which is expected to go on sale soon. This approach shows that the brand gives greater space to connected technologies in its new generation electric models.
Large SUV models also get their share from the new system. Starting with the 2026 model year, Google Gemini will be offered as standard equipment in all versions of the Pilot and Passport. On the other hand, on the CR-V side, the feature will only be available in the Sport Touring Hybrid hardware level. Ridgeline pick-up and Odyssey minivan will not have Google Gemini support in the current model year.
In addition, Honda adopts a different approach than some of its competitors in the digitalization process. While many automakers have moved basic controls such as air conditioning and audio systems entirely to touch screens in recent years, Honda continues to retain physical buttons. Providing physical control elements, especially for functions frequently used while driving, is welcomed by many users in terms of ease of use and safety. The fact that the brand maintains this approach while developing the Google Gemini integration reveals that it prefers to offer new technologies together with existing usage habits.
