Google Maps takes action against business pages that cooperate with fake reviews and clearly displays such activities to its users. Google will impose various restrictions on business profiles that violate the search engine giant’s Fake Engagement policy. These restrictions include temporarily removing comments, blocking new comments or ratings, and displaying warning messages on profiles where fake comments have been deleted.
These business profile restrictions first came into effect in the UK earlier this year. However, Search Engine Roundtable states that the support page will be updated in mid-September and this application will be valid globally. Currently, only users in the UK can see business alerts, like the example shared by Mike Blumenthal on X.
Google’s prohibited and restricted content policy emphasizes that contributions to Google Maps must “reflect an authentic experience of a place or business.” Business pages do not allow displaying content that does not accurately represent the location or product or that is given to reviewers in exchange for payment, discounts, or free product. Google will also attempt to detect fake reviews made using reviews from multiple accounts, emulators, modified operating systems, or methods that masquerade as “real interaction” in order to artificially boost a business’s rating.
It’s not yet clear how Google will determine which reviews violate these rules, but it’s thought businesses may avoid posting fake reviews for fear of losing reputation. Rather than having suspicious reviews disappear without explanation, the warning message can help users avoid places that Google deems untrustworthy.
Google Maps toughens fake engagement policy
These new measures by Google aim to prevent those who try to artificially increase the reputation of business profiles. In particular, the spread of fake reviews can mislead users and give businesses an unfair advantage. Google’s new policy shows that tougher measures will be taken against such abuse.
Google’s effort to combat fake reviews stands out as an important step to ensure users have access to safe and accurate information. This aims to provide both businesses and users with a more transparent experience on online platforms. Preventing fake reviews will not only increase user trust but also contribute to a more fair competition.
