Google has launched an important design innovation in the Gmail application for iPhone and iPad users. Based on the Material Design 3 approach, this update also carries the line we have seen in Android and web versions to the iOS side. Thus, the user experience is made more consistent between platforms. The update was gradually distributed with Gmail’s 6.0.250413 version.
The Material 3 design brings significant changes in the overall appearance of the application. First of all, the search bar was removed from the previously rounded rectangular form and got a pill -shaped design. This change aims to direct users’ attention to a more functional interface. In addition, a significant innovation stands out in the lower navigation bar.
If Google chat and meet features integrated in the Gmail application are active, users encounter a pill -shaped demonstration that emphasizes the tab. In the past, while the icon itself was illuminated, the entire tab is marked significantly. In addition, the “Create” button has been redesigned and gained a more modern look. Now this button has a rounded rectangular form.
Gmail’s new design offers a more holistic experience to iOS users
Another remarkable detail of the update was the change of the emphasis colors used in the application. Red, which was previously characteristic of Gmail, is replaced by a quieter blue tone. This change adapts to the new design language that Google adopts in all its products. In addition, readability is increased by leaving more spaces between interface elements throughout the application.
On the other hand, Gmail’s navigation drawer, ie folders and labels, no change was made. Users can switch between accounts, as they are used to, and access folders. However, a small but remarkable innovation stands out on the display display. The three point icons in the upper right corner are no longer vertical, but horizontally.
In addition, the transition to the Material 3 design language in the iOS ecosystem is not limited to Gmail. Google Chat, Home, Maps, Meet, Photos and search applications have similarly switched to the new design approach. However, the Google calendar application has not yet received its share of this change. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that Calendar has been studied on some new features.
The Google Calendar application side will be offered to create and edit birthday events for iOS users. When creating a new activity, users will now be able to see the “Birthday” option directly. This feature is not yet opened to all users, but a gradual distribution process is applied. Thus, iOS users will be able to plan their birthday more easily.
Although the new design of the Gmail application offers a particularly aesthetically innovation, it does not leave functionality in the second place. The simplification and color transitions in the interface aim to provide both an experience and more fluent use. With this approach, Google is trying to give iOS users a feeling similar to those in Android. However, some users may have difficulty in adapting to these changes due to habit.
Users can have the opportunity to directly discover this new experience by updating the Gmail application via the App Store. In addition, innovations in the calendar application in the future are expected to reach all users.
