ChatGPT’s number of users competes with Google Chrome

Developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT is rapidly becoming widespread as one of the most striking examples of artificial intelligence-supported tools in the digital world. This artificial intelligence-based chat platform, which will reach 3.7 billion monthly visits by 2024, broke a significant record in the number of users. So much so that ChatGPT, which has around 3.45 billion monthly users of Google Chrome, one of the most used browsers today, proves the interest in new areas of use of artificial intelligence in the technology world.

According to Similarweb data, ChatGPT’s traffic increased by 17.2 percent on a monthly basis and 115.9 percent on an annual basis. Behind this growth are strategic steps such as OpenAI’s product updates and moving its web address from chat.openai.com to chatgpt.com. ChatGPT, which achieved an important milestone by reaching 2.2 billion visits in May 2024, shows that users’ interest in the platform continues to increase. This growth is quite remarkable compared to other popular AI tools.

Since its initial launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has been continuously updated by OpenAI. In this process, the company added new features to the platform, more advanced language models and additional applications that will enrich the user experience. For example, the recently introduced ChatGPT Search feature provides users with real-time data. In this way, users can access instant information in various fields such as sports scores, stock market information or current news. This innovation leads ChatGPT to be seen as an alternative source to Google Search. However, experts state that ChatGPT will not fully compete with search engines such as Google because it is still browser-based.

On the other hand, Google Chrome continues to maintain its position as the most popular browser, reaching 35.4 billion users in 2024. However, despite recording a growth of 45.35 percent in the last five years, it is observed that the annual growth rate remains at low levels. This shows that users are interested in new digital tools for their different needs and that browser usage is beginning to diversify.

AI platforms other than ChatGPT are also growing

Besides ChatGPT, other AI platforms show a similar growth trend. As of October 2024, Perplexity chatbot reached 90.8 million visits, recording a monthly growth of 25.5 percent and 199.2 percent annually. Google’s Gemini chatbot also received 291.6 million visits during the same period, representing a monthly increase of 6.2 percent and an annual increase of 19 percent. The new artificial intelligence features offered by Google with ChromeOS updates continue to increase users’ interest in such tools.

On the other hand, Anthropic’s Claude chatbot received 84.1 million visits in October with its desktop application for Windows and macOS platforms. Claude contributed to the competition among artificial intelligence-supported chat bots by growing by 25.5 percent monthly and 394.9 percent annually. Microsoft’s web-based Copilot platform received 69.4 million visits, a monthly increase of 87.6 percent in the same period.

Finally, Google-supported NotebookLM received 31.5 million visits by contributing to note-taking and content editing processes with artificial intelligence commands. This tool helps users analyze and organize different information formats. With a monthly growth rate of more than 200 percent, this application also reflects the interest in artificial intelligence-supported content editing tools.
