Canon has introduced the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II, the highly anticipated new products of the EOS R System designed to take professional photography and video shooting to the next level. Both products offer users the best workflow process ever thanks to their unrivaled high performance, accelerated shooting imaging systems and deep learning-based assistive technologies.
While the EOS R1 enables news and sports professionals to capture headline-grabbing images with its advanced features, the EOS R5 Mark II allows hybrid professional users to take on a variety of different types of shots and accomplish all kinds of creative projects.
The launch of the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II full-frame mirrorless cameras represents a milestone in Canon’s history. The EOS R1 is the first camera in the EOS R series, following the EOS-1 series, renowned for its high performance and reliability heritage. The EOS R5 Mark II replaces the highly acclaimed EOS R5, combining high resolution, speed and 8K video performance.
Both models feature a host of extra benefits, including sensors with higher pixel counts, improved LEDs, expanded eye detection areas, and an updated detection algorithm that offers a unique and natural way to pick out subjects in complex scenes.
The EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II offer four times the resolution or reduced noise in-camera when using JPEG or HEIF formats thanks to the new imaging platform. Users can achieve improved image quality with deep learning, in-camera resolution upscaling and noise reduction. In addition, users can crop and increase resolution in-camera and easily send photos without the need for additional editing applications.
Both cameras come with up to 8.5 stops of image stabilization, making them especially effective in low light or other challenging shooting conditions.
For videographers, the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II offer 12-bit RAW video internally to the memory card. They also provide proxy video recording using Cinema EOS Video Recording formats along with Canon Log 2 and 3, and four-channel audio capability. This takes professional video production to new heights, delivering exceptional quality and creative flexibility no matter the shooting scenario. The cameras simultaneously record high-resolution still images and Full HD video, and offer the option of external recording via the HDMI type A port.
The machines feature a range of features to support professional workflows, including fast, stable connectivity and fail-safe options. The C2PA content verification format allows for multiple routes to image/video destinations, such as news reporting or reviewing the first shots of a film.
It also supports industry-standard file naming, separate photo/video folders and advanced tagging in the News ML-G2 standard. Both cameras become the first EOS series cameras to offer new levels of transfer speeds by supporting in-body Wi-Fi6E/11ax 6GHz, while the EOS R1 also supports in-body 2.5Gbps Ethernet connectivity and Dual Threaded FTP, with users taking advantage of 2.5Gbps Ethernet capability via the optional handle on the EOS R5 Mark II.
Canon EOS R1 arrives 35 years after the first EOS-1
Exactly 35 years after the first EOS-1 was introduced, the EOS R1 continues the legacy of cameras for professionals everywhere, with game-changing autofocus, speed, reliability and durability.
Designed for the discerning sports photographer, the EOS R1 ensures that you never miss a beat in the fast-paced world of sports and news photography. Equipped with a unique Cross-Type AF system that sets new standards, the EOS R1 can handle any challenging situation.
This cutting-edge technology, a first for Canon, features an all-new Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor arrangement. In this new arrangement, each GB cell of pixels is rotated 90 degrees to deliver autofocus tracking precision along the vertical and horizontal axes of the sensor, giving users fast, accurate results and the ability to capture an image they might have previously missed.
The camera features an incredible 40fps silent electronic shutter with AF tracking and 20 frames per second pre-continuous shooting capability, allowing users to follow the scene without compromising on image quality. It offers exceptional high-speed performance with 24.2 megapixels of resolution, while deep learning, image resolution enhancement and noise reduction enable this resolution to be increased to 96 megapixels in-camera. Improved flash sync speeds of up to 1/400th of a second, white balance and image exposure evaluation provide greater consistency and versatility across different types of photography. In addition, the EOS R1 supports hybrid multimedia functionality with resolutions of 6K at 60fps or 4K at 120fps, as well as Full HD at 240fps.
The Canon EOS R1 offers the best performance even in the most challenging shooting conditions with its renewed exterior texture, integrated vertical grip and weather-sealed body. Its high-resolution electronic viewfinder (EVF) and large viewfinder hood that prevent fog make it a comfortable camera for long-term sports shooting. The newly added two-stage AF-ON button allows two programmable functions to be instantly activated with a single button.
