Apple announced at its WWDC 2024 keynote that it is partnering with OpenAI to add ChatGPT to Siri. ChatGPT will be available for free without an account on iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia later this year. Apple also underlined that no records of user queries will be kept.
The popular chatbot will also be integrated into Apple's system-wide authoring tools. Additionally, paid ChatGPT subscribers will be able to link their accounts to access OpenAI's premium features on Apple's operating systems.
The long-awaited partnership comes as Apple looks to integrate artificial intelligence features that rival those of other major tech companies. Apple was in talks with both Google and OpenAI to incorporate artificial intelligence technologies into its operating systems. Ultimately, the party with whom the agreement was made was OpenAI.
Apple will use GPT-4o in collaboration with OpenAI
There was speculation that OpenAI's recent launch of GPT-4o, which featured a voice assistant that was criticized for looking uncannily similar to Scarlett Johansson in the movie Her, was intended to demonstrate how OpenAI's technology could improve Siri. Today, Apple confirmed that GPT-4o will be the model that supports ChatGPT on Apple devices when iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia launch later this year.
In addition to its partnership with OpenAI, Apple also announced new artificial intelligence features called Apple Intelligence.
