Amazon has decided to re-evaluate and limit some of its programs in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). This step follows similar practices by other tech giants such as Meta and Microsoft.
Candi Castleberry, Amazon’s VP of Inclusive Experiences and Technology, said in a memo to employees that the company is in the process of discontinuing “outdated programs and materials” related to representation and inclusion. “Instead of independent groups creating their own programs, we focus on programs with proven results and aim to develop a more inclusive culture,” Castleberry said.
This development is also supported by changes made to the “Our Positions” page on Amazon’s corporate website. The page, which previously included specific topics such as Black rights and LGBTQ+ rights, has now been updated with a general statement emphasizing its commitment to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. “We occasionally update this page to reflect updates to our various programs and positions,” said Amazon spokeswoman Kelly Nantel.
Amazon isn’t the first company to rethink its DEI programs
The re-evaluation of DEI programs in the technology sector is not limited to Amazon. Companies like Meta, Microsoft, and Zoom have taken similar steps and decided to reduce or discontinue their DEI efforts. The change in the legal and political environment, especially in the USA, was effective in making these decisions.
Meta said in an internal memo that it took these steps because the legal and political environment for DEI efforts in the United States has changed. It was also stated that the term DEI is perceived by some to mean preferential treatment to certain groups.
These changes come as technology companies prepare for the upcoming US presidential administration. The new administration is expected to have a negative attitude towards DEI initiatives.
Re-evaluating DEI programs requires companies to develop new strategies for how to achieve inclusion and equity goals. Experts say such steps can affect trust among employees and companies should reconsider their efforts to create an inclusive culture.
Amazon and other tech giants’ re-evaluation of their DEI programs signals the beginning of a new era of inclusion and equity across the industry. It is being watched with curiosity how companies will follow this process and what kind of working environment they will offer to their employees.
