A remarkable detail has emerged about the iPhone 18 Pro, which Apple is expected to introduce in the first part of next month. New information shows that some cases produced for the iPhone 17 Pro can also be used with the iPhone 18 Pro. The fact that the packaging prepared by an accessory manufacturer stated that the same case is compatible with both iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro strengthened this possibility. Moreover, it is stated that the products in question are already on sale in Best Buy stores in the USA. If the information is correct, Apple may have changed the case dimensions in the new Pro model in a limited way so as not to disrupt case compatibility.
The packaging, which Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman brought up on X, clearly shows that the two phones can be used with the same accessory. Another sign soon came that this wasn’t just a guess from one accessory manufacturer. The CEO of a different Apple accessory maker confirmed that he received similar information from his suppliers. In his response to a question about the iPhone 18 Pro Max, the same manager stated that a similar situation would apply to this model. Accordingly, it may be possible to attach cases prepared for the iPhone 17 Pro Max to the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
At this point, it should be noted that case compatibility does not only depend on the general height and width values of the phones. The dimensions and location of the camera bump, the placement of the side buttons, the case thickness and the location of the ports also directly affect the ability to use an old case on a new phone. Therefore, the fact that iPhone 17 Pro cases actually work seamlessly with the iPhone 18 Pro may indicate that there are very limited changes in terms of external design between the two generations. However, the compatibility information on the packaging alone does not mean technical measurements verified by Apple. For a definitive evaluation, the physical dimensions of the new models need to be disclosed.
New information contradicts iPhone 18 Pro case thickness claims
The resulting case information does not match some previously shared rumors about the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Previous claims had suggested that both phones would be thicker than their counterparts in the iPhone 17 Pro series. If the difference in thickness is significant, it may be difficult for existing cases to fit properly on new phones. Even a change of a few millimeters can cause compatibility problems, especially in hard cases whose dimensions are precisely determined according to the phone. Despite this, the fact that the information accessory manufacturers receive from the supply chain is accurate suggests that the expected size change may not be as much as previously claimed.
Another possibility here is that accessory manufacturers design their products with certain tolerances to be compatible with two generations. While small thickness differences can be tolerated in cases with flexible edges, camera control, button openings and cuts around the camera module require more precise measurements. For this reason, just because two models are written on the packaging does not prove that the physical dimensions will be exactly the same. On the other hand, the presence of products with these packaging in the stores of a major retailer such as Best Buy shows that accessory manufacturers are advancing their preparations based on the information they have. It is also necessary to take into account that such product information may change before Apple’s official announcement is made.
It is estimated that Apple will introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models in the first part of September, and September 8 or 9 is among the possible dates. Since the company has not yet officially announced the dimensions of the devices or accessory compatibility, available information is limited to signals from accessory manufacturers and the supply chain. The fact that iPhone 17 Pro cases work with the new model may provide a practical advantage in that existing users can continue to use some of their accessories when changing phones. However, even minor changes to the camera section or button positions may mean that not every case will be equally compatible. The exact case dimensions, which will be announced with Apple’s launch, will show which of the previous thickness claims and the new information from accessory manufacturers are correct.
