It is claimed that the preparations for Samsung’s new generation triple-folding smartphone are behind the planned schedule. According to a new claim from South Korea, the company is considering postponing the introduction of the model called Galaxy Z TriFold 2. On the other hand, it is stated that faster progress has been made in the development process of the sliding screen smartphone, which has been on the agenda with patents and concept studies for a long time. Although there is no official statement from the company about these products, the latest information indicates that there may be some changes in Samsung’s foldable product strategy.
According to the information shared by South Korea-based leak source Lanzuk on Naver, Galaxy Z TriFold 2 continues its development phase. According to the source, Samsung is working on a completely new hinge system on the second generation model. However, information based on sources in the supply chain suggests that some recent cost-related problems may affect the release schedule of the product. No details are included in the leak about which components these cost increases are caused by or how long the postponement will last.
The allegations also coincide with the information Lanzuk previously shared. In previous leaks, it was stated that Samsung had developed a hinge mechanism that greatly renewed the existing design. It is stated that the aim of the new system is to reduce both the thickness and weight of the device by designing the hinge components thinner and with a thickness close to each other.
New hinge design could provide a thinner and lighter body
Such a change could be particularly notable for Samsung’s largest foldable phone. The current Galaxy Z TriFold model has a thickness of 12.9 mm and a weight of 309 grams when folded. On the other hand, the folded thickness of Galaxy Z Fold 7 is 8.9 mm and its weight is stated as 215 grams. The difference is noticeable in terms of portability in daily use. Therefore, a thinner and lighter body design can make the second generation TriFold model much more useful. However, the realization of this seems to depend on the new hinge system being produced at costs suitable for mass production.
On the other hand, in the same leak, new information is also shared about Samsung’s sliding screen smartphone, which has been talked about for a long time. Allegedly, the development process of this product is progressing positively and the possibility of introducing the device earlier than previously expected has gained strength. This information is similar to another news recently published in the South Korean press. In the news in question, it was claimed that Samsung aims to launch its first commercial sliding or pop-up screen smartphone in the first half of 2028.
Sliding screen phones adopt a different working principle than today’s foldable models. In these devices, the screen expands from the inside of the body to the outside instead of being folded with the help of a hinge. Thus, the user can access a larger screen area when needed. Although Samsung Display has exhibited different concept panels such as Rollable Flex and Flex Hybrid at many fairs in recent years, it has not yet launched a commercial smartphone using this technology. Despite this, the company’s technical know-how on the screen side keeps the possibility of such a product coming to market in the future.
However, all available information is based on industry sources and leaks. Samsung has not made any official confirmation about either the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 model or a sliding screen smartphone. Despite this, if the latest claims are true, it appears that some priorities may change in the company’s product planning for new generation form factors. Official statements and new supply chain information from Samsung in the coming period will provide a clearer picture of the development process of these two devices.
