Bluesky officially announced its new CEO

Bluesky announced that Toni Schneider, who has been serving as interim CEO for approximately four months, has become the company’s permanent CEO. Schneider, who took over the leadership temporarily after Jay Graber left his position in March, will now serve as the official CEO of the social media platform. Schneider, who was previously an investor and consultant at Bluesky, said that in his new role, they will focus on the wider adoption of open and decentralized social network technologies.

In his statement, Schneider emphasized that Bluesky’s main goal is to develop open and decentralized public communication technologies and support their widespread use. Stating that it is important for him to contribute to the realization of this vision, Schneider also expressed that he was pleased to support the creation of a more open social web ecosystem. Statements show that the decentralized internet approach will continue to be one of the main priorities in the company’s long-term strategy.

Bluesky aims to grow with new features

Toni Schneider is known in the technology world especially as the founding CEO of Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com. Schneider, who supported the company as both an investor and consultant before joining the Bluesky management, draws attention with his operational experience. Giving him the job permanently is considered a step compatible with Bluesky’s goals of increasing the number of users and scaling the platform more consistently.

Jay Graber, who left his position as CEO in March, has not left the company completely. While announcing his change of position, Graber, who has been serving as the CEO of Bluesky since 2021, stated that the company needed an experienced manager who will focus on operations and application processes during the growth phase. Stating that he will focus on developing new ideas and product innovation, Graber continues to serve as Chief Innovation Officer at Bluesky.

Schneider also shared some details about the platform’s development plans. Accordingly, one of Bluesky’s next goals will be to introduce new social spaces that allow users to create smaller and more private communities. The features that will be included in this structure, called Atmosphere, are expected to support new forms of interaction on the platform and diversify the user experience. Schneider thinks these innovations could mark a new turning point in Bluesky’s growth.

Bluesky announced in June that it planned to add a Reddit-like community system to the platform within the year. With this feature, users will be able to create their own communities around specific interests, hobbies or current topics and make more focused posts in these areas. Creating more niche groups, along with a large, single-stream timeline experience, can allow users to more easily interact with people with similar interests.

Bluesky, which started as a venture supported by Jack Dorsey, continues to develop the open source and decentralized social network infrastructure called AT Protocol today. The platform differs from traditional social networks with its approach that aims to enable users to move their identities and social graphs between different services. Despite this, the process of growing the user base and consistently introducing new features continues to be among the most important issues for the company. The appointment of Toni Schneider as permanent CEO also reflects Bluesky’s management approach, which aims to advance both technical development and operational growth at the same time.
