Apple’s new processor road map revealed

It has been claimed that Apple is preparing for a remarkable change in the Apple Silicon road map for the coming years. According to information shared by Bloomberg writer Mark Gurman, the company is considering moving directly to the M7 generation instead of developing the Pro and Max versions of the M6 processor. If this claim comes true, Apple will only offer a basic level processor for the first time in the Apple Silicon era. This information, which has not yet been confirmed by the company, also reshapes the expectations regarding the update schedule of the Mac product family in the coming years.

To date, Apple has updated its performance-oriented Mac models by introducing Pro, Max and, in some periods, Ultra versions, following the basic model in the M1, M2, M3, M4 and finally M5 generations. However, the new report indicates that this usual approach may change in the M6 generation. Such a choice may mean that Apple directs its development resources to a different architecture. In addition, it is considered that the company’s desire to accelerate artificial intelligence efforts on the hardware and software side may also be effective in this decision.

The M7 series is expected to be developed with a focus on artificial intelligence

According to the information provided by Mark Gurman, Apple is designing the M7 processor family to focus especially on artificial intelligence workloads. The company highlighted the innovations in Siri with Apple Intelligence features at this year’s WWDC event. Therefore, it is not a surprise that the next generation Apple Silicon processors will be developed to provide more processing power to the artificial intelligence models running on the device.

According to the report, the basic M7 processor is expected to be available in the first half of 2027. It is stated that the M7 Pro and M7 Max models, which will offer higher performance, may be introduced towards the end of the same year. It is stated that the Ultra series, which Apple has not updated for a long time, may also be on the agenda again. According to Gurman’s claim, the M7 Ultra processor can be introduced in 2028.

If this schedule comes true, it will be seen that Apple follows a different plan in its processor update strategy than in previous years. To date, the company has regularly updated its models for professional Mac users with Pro and Max processors. Skipping this step in the M6 generation may directly affect the update cycle of products such as MacBook Pro and Mac Studio. However, since Apple does not have an official statement on this matter, the available information is limited only to the claims shared by industry sources.

On the other hand, it is not yet clear how this change will affect the touch-screen MacBook Pro plans, which have been on the agenda for a long time. In various previous claims, it was suggested that Apple could offer its first touch-screen laptop with the M6-based MacBook Pro. If the M6 Pro and Max models are really canceled, there is a possibility that the development calendar of this product will be rearranged.

Apple introduced the M5 Pro and M5 Max processors this year. In addition, the basic M6 processor is expected to be available in entry-level Mac models before the end of 2026. Despite this, it is necessary to wait for the company’s upcoming product launches for Apple’s processor plans to become official. For now, the information shared by Bloomberg is considered as early-stage claims indicating that preparations are being made for a new era focused on artificial intelligence in the Apple Silicon road map.
