Valve confirms, FSR 4 support for Steam Machine is on the way

Steam Machine stands out as a gaming system approaching the level of PlayStation 5 with the hardware power it offers. Despite this, one of the criticized aspects of the device was its use of AMD’s previous generation FSR image upscaling technology. The image quality achieved, especially in moving scenes, lagged behind PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro in some games. The latest statements from Valve indicate that this situation may change in the future.

Pierre-Loup Griffais, Valve’s head of SteamOS and portable gaming devices, confirmed to The Verge that the company is working with AMD to bring FSR 4 support to the Steam Machine. In an additional statement made by the company via e-mail, it was stated that FSR 4 would arrive “soon”, but no further details were shared about the release schedule.

Considering the price tag of $ 1,049 for the 512 GB storage version of Steam Machine, such software updates that can improve image quality become even more important for the device. Although a strong foundation is provided on the hardware side, image processing technologies are also among the factors that determine the user experience.

FSR 4 stands out as AMD’s most up-to-date image upscaling technology. It is known that in this version, the company focused on preserving image integrity and increasing the level of detail, especially in moving scenes. In addition, features such as artificial intelligence-supported frame generation are among the innovations offered by technology.

AMD FSR 4 promises significant improvements in image quality

With the arrival of FSR 4, Steam Machine users are expected to get images that feel like higher resolution. It is stated that blurring, edge distortions and image errors that occur during movement, which can occasionally be seen in traditional upgrading methods, will be managed more successfully in the new version. Especially in modern games that require high graphics power, such improvements can help deliver a clearer image while maintaining the frame rate.

On the other hand, the arrival of FSR 4 support to Steam Machine also draws attention in terms of AMD’s plans for RDNA 3-based integrated graphics units. Previously revealed information raised questions about whether FSR 4 would reach such systems. Valve’s statement that it is working directly with AMD shows that support is not only at a theoretical level.

Valve states that FSR 4 will deliver a “significant improvement in graphics upscaling quality” on Steam Machine. However, it is not yet clear which games will benefit from this technology and whether all features will be available from day one. Despite this, the company’s statements reveal that Steam Machine will continue to receive long-term software support and that efforts are continuing to improve the image quality. When the FSR 4 update is released, the device is expected to offer a more competitive image performance, especially in moving gaming scenes.
