Apple pulls resources away from Vision Pro and directs it to smart glasses

It is claimed that Apple has made remarkable changes in its future plans in the field of mixed reality. According to the information shared by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, John Ternus, who is preparing to serve as the new CEO of the company, decided to stop some projects related to the Vision Pro series. Accordingly, the second generation Vision Pro and the Vision Air, which was introduced as a lighter model, are no longer among the company’s active product plans. It is stated that Apple has concentrated its efforts in this field within a narrower framework and directed its resources to smart glasses projects.

According to Kuo’s assessment, Apple gives priority to product categories that have a higher potential to reach a wide user base. For this reason, it is stated that investments in the Vision Pro family have been reduced, while smart glasses projects that are more suitable for daily use scenarios have been highlighted. While it is stated that the road map shared by the analyst in June 2025, which included a total of seven products, is no longer valid, it is stated that only two products are in the development process in the current table.

The first of these products is shown as an artificial intelligence-supported model that is expected to rival Meta’s Ray-Ban branded smart glasses. The second product is defined as a glasses model that will offer augmented reality features and be equipped with screen technology.

Apple’s next-generation smart glasses plans extend to 2029

According to Kuo’s predictions, artificial intelligence-supported smart glasses are expected to be available in 2027. A longer development process is anticipated for the screen model that will offer an augmented reality experience. The analyst thinks that this product, which will use optical waveguide technology, may be released in 2029 at the earliest.

Optical waveguide technology consists of special optical components that direct images from microdisplays to the user’s eyes. Thanks to this structure, the glasses remain transparent while the digital contents appear to be superimposed on the real world image. Similar approaches were used in products such as Microsoft HoloLens and Magic Leap. Despite this, it is known that this technology still poses various technical difficulties in areas such as cost, battery life and image quality.

On the other hand, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg also made evaluations about Kuo’s report. According to Gurman, the Vision Air project was terminated in October 2025. It is stated that the screened glasses project, which was planned to work with Mac computers, was shelved in January 2025. In addition, it is stated that artificial intelligence-supported smart glasses are expected to be introduced towards the end of 2027.

However, there is a difference of opinion between the two analysts regarding the future of Vision Pro. Kuo argues that Apple is no longer working on any Vision Pro models. Gurman, on the other hand, claims that Vision Pro 2 is in the testing phase, but the product category is currently in a low priority position. In his previous news, Gurman stated that Apple was developing a lighter and more affordable Vision Pro model, but this device is not expected to go on sale before the end of 2028 or 2029.

The change in company management is seen as one of the important developments behind these decisions. John Ternus is scheduled to take over as Apple CEO from Tim Cook on September 1, 2026. Cook will continue to serve as Executive Chairman of the company. Apple has not yet made an official statement regarding the future of Vision Pro or smart glasses projects. Despite this, recent information indicates that the company has adopted a more selective and long-term approach in its mixed reality strategy.
