Switching from iPhone to Android becomes easier with Android 17

Android 17 expands wireless data transfer for those switching from iPhone to Android phone. The method developed by Google, passwords, Wi-Fi information, Google accounts and eSIM carries it to the new Android phone. Photos, videos, contacts, messages and calendar entries also remain within the scope of transfer. Google has made the feature available on select Pixel phones and has also added it to Samsung’s new foldable models.

The new transfer method appears directly on the first setup screen of the Android phone. So you don’t have to download a separate app or use different tools for the two platforms. However, the source iPhone iOS 26.3 or later it needs to run. After pairing, the Android phone receives supported data via wireless connection.

Google supported photos, videos, contacts, messages, and calendars in the previous transfer tool. Android 17 also adds account and connection information, which directly affects daily use. When saved passwords and Wi-Fi information are transferred to the new phone, the process of re-logging into accounts becomes shorter. Additionally, eSIM support makes it easy to transfer the phone number to a new device on compatible operators.

In the past, Apple and Google offered separate mobile applications for those who wanted to switch platforms. While Google was using the Switch to Android application for iPhone users, Apple was offering the Move to iOS application on the Android side. However, the European Union Digital Markets Actasked companies to develop app-free data migration options. That’s why both companies added transfer tools directly to the phone’s setup steps.

Android 17 transfers more iPhone data to new phone

The Digital Markets Act mandates data portability to reduce users being locked into one operating system. In this context, Apple and Google have prepared built-in transfer options that work between iPhone and Android. When setting up a new Android phone or iPhone, the option to import data from the competing platform is available directly on the screen. Thus, it is not necessary to move the basic contents of the old phone through a separate application.

The European Commission had previously announced that Apple and Google were working together for full data transfer between devices. The Commission also announced that the two companies have developed a joint solution for eSIM transfer. This system reduces the need to change physical SIM cards on compatible operators or obtain a separate QR code. Android 17 makes available the part of this collaboration that extends to account, password and connection information.

Google, Android 17 wireless transfer tool to select Pixel devices starting in June started to disperse. The company did not disclose all supported Pixel models in a single list. However, the updated transfer option still works after installation on Pixel 9 and some newer Pixel phones. The account and backup section in the settings restarts the process for those who skipped the transfer during the first installation.

Samsung’s new announcement Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 models also support the Android 17-based transfer tool. On these phones, compatible data on the iPhone is transferred via wireless connection directly during installation. Google announced that it will bring the feature to more Android manufacturers and models in the future. The company has not yet shared a definitive release schedule for other brands.

The transfer tool does not completely copy all applications and every data within the application. Banking applications and services that require security verification may request re-login. Additionally, some chat applications continue to use their own backup and migration methods. Against this photos, videos, contacts, messages, calendars, accounts, passwords, Wi-Fi information and eSIMs It is among the supported contents.

The new method initiates the transfer directly from Android 17’s setup screen, removing the need for separate apps. The basic condition for transfer is that the source iPhone runs iOS 26.3 or later. On lines with operator support, eSIM information is transferred to the new phone along with other compatible data. While Google launched the feature with Pixel phones, it also announced support for the Galaxy Z Flip8 and Galaxy Z Fold8.
