SoftBank will invest 75 billion euros in data centers in France

SoftBank Group has announced a comprehensive investment plan to expand data center capacity in France. The company announced that it is considering investing up to 75 billion euros to support artificial intelligence and cloud computing infrastructure in the country. If this investment is completed, it is aimed to create a total of up to 5 gigawatts of additional data center capacity across France. SoftBank states that the initiative in question will be the largest artificial intelligence infrastructure investment in Europe.

The first phase of the plan focuses on the Hauts-de-France region in northern France. SoftBank aims to establish new data centers in the Loon-Plage, Bosquel and Bouchain areas in Dunkirk. According to the information shared by the company, a total capacity of 3.1 gigawatts will be created in this first phase and the facilities are planned to be operational by 2031. This capacity is expected to meet the high processing power required by artificial intelligence applications and to contribute to the expansion of the digital infrastructure in Europe.

SoftBank’s statement stands out as one of the latest examples of increasing infrastructure investments on a global scale in the field of artificial intelligence. The Japanese technology and investment giant is among both investors and customers of OpenAI. Therefore, the company’s steps towards data center capacity are important not only in terms of cloud services but also in terms of the computing power required for training and running artificial intelligence models.

The French government also considers the investment decision as a development that strengthens the country’s position in the field of technology and artificial intelligence. In his statement, French Minister of Economy Roland Lescure stated that the investment supports President Emmanuel Macron’s goal of making France a prominent center at all stages of the artificial intelligence value chain. In recent years, France has been offering various incentives regarding energy infrastructure, industrial zones and technology ecosystem in order to attract data center investments.

However, data center projects are increasingly becoming a matter of discussion around the world. In particular, topics such as the amount of energy required by large-scale artificial intelligence systems, environmental impacts and the load on electricity networks are brought to the public agenda. Issues such as high energy consumption, carbon emissions and water use of data centers attract the attention of regulators and local communities in many countries.

Similar debates are ongoing in the United States. Recently, opposition has gained strength in some regions due to environmental concerns about data center projects and possible effects on electricity prices. Despite this, SoftBank had previously announced its plan to build a new data center in Ohio. The company also announced that it was working on a project that envisages the construction of a new natural gas power plant with a capacity of 9.2 gigawatts to support this facility.

With the spread of artificial intelligence applications, data center investments are expected to accelerate in the coming years. The plan announced by SoftBank for France also shows that the scale of digital infrastructure in Europe is growing. However, the long-term success of such projects will depend not only on capacity increase but also on factors such as energy efficiency, sustainability and compatibility with local infrastructure. For this reason, the environmental and energy aspects of the investment, as well as its economic effects, are among the issues that will be closely monitored.
