Discord announced that it has introduced end-to-end encryption support for all voice and video calls on the platform. The security infrastructure that the company has been working on for a long time is now active by default in all one-on-one and group conversations. Accordingly, conversations will be encrypted without the need for users to open any additional settings. Discord only excludes stage channels called Stage Channels from this application. Apart from this, the new security system works automatically in all audio and video communications.
According to the information shared by the platform, thanks to end-to-end encryption, conversations can only be resolved on the devices of the users participating in the conversation. Thus, it is technically not possible for third parties, including Discord, to access the conversation contents. In recent years, the increasing debate about data privacy, especially in messaging and communication services, has led technology companies to expand such security measures. The step taken by Discord is considered as a continuation of this trend.
In addition, the company states that the new infrastructure has been developed in a way that does not negatively affect the user experience on the performance side. It is stated that the focus is on protecting basic communication elements such as voice delay, connection quality and image transfer. Considering that Discord is used extensively, especially by players, community managers and content creators, it seems that the issue of secure communication has become more visible for the platform.
Tech companies are moving in different directions when it comes to end-to-end encryption
There have been remarkable differences in the end-to-end encryption approach in the technology sector recently. While some companies are trying to spread this technology to wider areas, some platforms prefer to step back. Meta’s recent removal of end-to-end encryption support in Instagram direct messages was one of the most notable examples of this change. In addition, TikTok also announced that it would not offer this security technology in its direct messaging system.
On the other hand, a different approach on the Apple side draws attention. The company is preparing to encrypt RCS messages sent between iPhone and Android users. Thus, it is aimed to increase the level of privacy in cross-platform messaging. Google has also been offering encryption support in RCS messaging in the Android ecosystem for a long time. With Apple’s inclusion of this support in the system, it is expected that a more secure structure will be created in cross-platform communication.
Discord’s decision stands out as a remarkable development, especially for online communities. The platform has long become the center of not only players but also user groups with different interests. The service, which has a wide user base from educational communities to software developers, is therefore under increased scrutiny for security and privacy issues. While the new end-to-end encryption system provides a stronger technical infrastructure to protect users’ conversation contents, it also makes the platform’s security approach clearer.
