It is stated that Apple is preparing a new feature on Genmoji for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 versions. According to the information shared by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in the Power On newsletter, the company will create automatic Genmoji suggestions by using users’ photo archives and frequently used expressions. The main purpose of the feature seems to be to increase the use of Genmoji, which is offered within the scope of Apple Intelligence. It is stated that the new system will work optionally and users can turn it off via settings. Thus, Apple aims to reduce possible concerns about personal data sensitivity.
Genmoji was first available with iOS 18.2. One of Apple Intelligence’s first wave features, the system allowed users to produce custom emoji-like images by typing short text commands. Using artificial intelligence-supported rendering models, the feature was trying to produce results close to the standard emoji style. However, comments were made that the results obtained in the first version were not always consistent and that some productions were below expectations. Despite this, Apple continued to improve the feature in subsequent versions.
With iOS 26, Genmoji offered more comprehensive customization options, and support for creating new images by combining two different emojis was added. Now, with iOS 27, the system is aimed to work more proactively. The “Suggested Genmoji” option, which is stated to be included in the new keyboard settings, shows that suggestions will be created based on the user’s photos and frequently typed phrases. Thus, users will be able to encounter context-appropriate emoji suggestions without having to type manual commands.
Apple will offer Genmoji suggestions optionally with iOS 27
It is not yet clear what kind of user experience Apple will offer here. For the feature to be successful, the system must understand the context correctly and create truly relevant recommendations. Otherwise, users encountering random or irrelevant Genmoji options may reduce the daily use value of the feature. In addition, the use of personal photos and writing habits also raises some questions on the privacy side. This is why it is noteworthy that Apple does not make the feature mandatory by default and offers the option to turn it off.
On the other hand, it is not clear whether Genmoji still works with models that run entirely on the device. The fact that the company does not mention a significant upgrade in the image production model with the new version indicates that operations will continue largely with the on-device artificial intelligence infrastructure. Apple has recently emphasized privacy and local processing in its Apple Intelligence features. This approach stands out as one of the areas where the company tries to differentiate itself, especially in terms of processing user data without sending it to cloud systems.
In addition, it seems that Apple does not want to leave Genmoji as a tool for entertainment purposes only. The suggestion system, which is more visibly integrated into the keyboard experience, may enable the feature to be used more frequently in messaging applications. However, the extent to which users adopt such artificial intelligence-supported content production tools will depend on how accurate and consistent the system provides results. Apple is expected to share technical details on Genmoji in a more comprehensive manner with the iOS 27 announcement.
