Foxconn was the target of ransomware attack again

Foxconn, one of Apple’s largest production partners, confirmed that some of its facilities in North America were affected by a cyber attack in recent days. According to information shared by Wired, the ransomware group named Nitrogen claims to have stolen a total of 8 TB of data from the company. It is claimed that the data in question includes project details and technical drawings belonging to companies such as Dell, Google, Apple and Nvidia. Foxconn did not make a detailed statement regarding the scope of the incident. The company only stated that normal production operations had resumed at the affected facilities.

While the Nitrogen group’s claims attracted attention in the technology and production sectors, it is stated that the attack specifically targeted Foxconn’s North American operations. According to the information provided by Wired, the attackers claim that they obtained large amounts of data from Foxconn, which is defined as the electronics manufacturing giant. However, so far there has been no confirmed evidence that documents regarding Apple’s current or future product projects have been leaked. It is stated that there are no materials directly related to Apple in the shared sample files.

On the other hand, the first effects of the attack were seen at the Mount Pleasant facility in Wisconsin, USA. According to information provided by AppleInsider, employees reported that the company network was completely disabled in the morning hours of Friday, May 1. It was stated that Wi-Fi access was cut off in the early hours of the morning, and in the following hours, the systems in the production infrastructure began to be affected. One employee, who asked not to be identified, said staff were told to turn off their computers and not log back in. In addition, it was reported that employees had to keep their work records on paper forms because the electronic login and shift tracking systems did not work.

Foxconn has faced similar attacks before

It is stated that the cyber attack is not limited to Wisconsin only. In addition, it is stated that a Foxconn facility in Houston, Texas, may have been affected by the incident. Although the company did not confirm which facilities were directly attacked, it appears that there were temporary interruptions in production processes. However, Foxconn is reportedly restarting some network systems in a controlled manner and gradually returning production operations to normal.

Foxconn has been the target of similar ransomware attacks in recent years. In 2020, a Foxconn facility in Ciudad JuΓ‘rez, Mexico was subject to a large-scale attack. At that time, it was announced that the systems were encrypted, company data was seized and the attackers demanded Bitcoin worth approximately $34.6 million. It was stated that the ransomware group called DoppelPaymer was behind the attack.

In addition, in 2022, the LockBit group also targeted another facility of Foxconn in Mexico and caused disruptions in production. In 2024, it came to the fore with another attack organized by LockBit, a subsidiary named Foxsemicon Integrated Technology. In that incident, allegations of data breaches and interventions into systems attracted attention. In addition to all this, Foxconn’s global production network and work with major technology companies make the company one of the high-value targets for cybercrime groups.
