Giant screen announcement from Samsung that will change movie theaters

Samsung announced its new generation display solution for movie theaters as part of CinemaCon 2026. The company expanded its product range, especially targeting large format halls, by introducing the 14-meter wide Onyx Cinema LED screen at the event held in Las Vegas. This model, which attracts attention at first glance, aims to offer operational convenience along with high image quality. Thus, it is aimed to provide a clearer and brighter visual experience to the audience while reducing the technical infrastructure burden of cinema operators.

The Onyx series, which is among Samsung’s cinema screens, already offered solutions at different scales. There were 5 meter options for smaller halls and 10 meter options for medium-sized halls. The newly announced 14-meter model is positioned to appeal to larger halls. However, thanks to the flexible structure of the screen, it seems possible to expand it up to 20 meters when necessary. Preserving image quality during this expansion stands out as one of the most technically remarkable aspects of the system.

Samsung’s LED-based cinema screens do not require lamps and cooling systems, unlike traditional projection systems. This significantly reduces maintenance requirements and also reduces operating costs. In addition, thanks to the modular structure, any component can be easily replaced, minimizing downtime in case of possible malfunctions. This approach enables salon staff to focus directly on the customer experience rather than technical operations.

The rise of LED screens in movie theaters is gaining momentum

Although the use of LED screen technology in the cinema industry is still in the widespread stage, there has been an increasing interest in recent years. Samsung, on the other hand, has gained a certain advantage thanks to its early moves in this field. The new 14-meter model with 3 mm pixel pitch offers an assertive structure in preserving sharpness and color accuracy, especially on large screens. In this way, the viewing experience can be maintained without loss of detail in high-resolution content.

Star Cinema Grill, operating in the USA, was one of the businesses that early adopted Samsung’s Onyx screen technology. The company started using this system in its salon in Richmond, Texas, in 2019. Despite this, the spread of LED displays throughout the industry is progressing gradually. However, advantages such as increased energy efficiency, low maintenance and long life pave the way for this technology to be preferred in more movie theaters.

In addition to all this, Samsung’s new model creates an alternative especially for premium large format living rooms. However, factors such as high installation costs and the prevalence of existing projection infrastructure are among the main limitations of LED solutions. Despite this, the technical advantages and flexibility offered by technology may be one of the determining factors in the transformation of movie theaters in the long term.
