Google brings a PC solution to the storage problem on Android phones

Google is preparing to introduce a new feature that will alleviate storage congestion on the Android side. Android Authority’s Google Play Services v26.15.31 beta The “Automatic backup” codes revealed in the version show that a local PC backup option will be added to Quick Share. The most important point is that the system copies photo, video and audio files to your home computer without uploading them to the cloud. This way, you do not pay additional fees and you have more peace of mind when deleting files from your phone.

Frankly speaking, the most critical detail here is that this does not seem to be limited to a classical equalization logic. You can choose which content types to back up within Quick Share settings, as well as a manually triggered option along with an automatic sync option, Android Authority found. “Back up now” button is also included. Another important detail in the news is that the file you delete from the phone does not delete the copy on the PC. This suggests that the feature is designed not only for temporary transfer between devices, but also for a direct space freeing scenario.

In fact, rather than establishing a completely new infrastructure, Google is moving its existing system to a smarter place. Google’s official help pages confirm today that you can already transfer files between your Android phone and Windows computer with Quick Share. The company also launched the Quick Share for Windows application. 64-bit Windows 10 and above It clearly states that it works on systems, that the devices must be located in close proximity and that the transfer is protected by end-to-end encryption. Therefore, when the new feature arrives, we can say that we will see an automatic local backup layer built on top of the existing sharing infrastructure.

A practical move that reduces cloud costs

However, today’s Android backup landscape is still cloud-centric for most users. In Google’s official support documents, we see that the current backup flow works with automatic copying to the cloud over Wi-Fi. Free storage space runs out very quickly as photos, videos, WhatsApp backups and other files grow. Therefore, although the idea of local PC backup does not seem new from a technical perspective, it offers a much more realistic solution for daily use.

In addition, many homes already have a laptop or desktop computer sitting idle. Unless you’re dealing with gamer-grade giant archives or professional video projects, most of the hundreds of gigabytes of space remain idle. This feature prepared by Google turns this fact into an advantage. When you have a storage problem, instead of purchasing a new cloud package, you can use your own computer as a wireless backup safe. We can easily say that this approach is much more meaningful, especially for those using entry and mid-segment Android phones.

On the other hand, there is also an important limit here. Today we have an APK teardown, not an official launch. So Google has not announced this feature yet, it may change the interface, narrow the scope or postpone the release schedule. Still, the signs look strong, as the feature is defined directly within the Quick Share settings, and Google’s existing Windows integration also lays the technical groundwork for it. Long story short, when this feature is released, it may be one of the most modest but most useful innovations on the Android side of the last period.
