240 Hz screen test claim emerged for OnePlus 17

It is claimed that a 240 Hz refresh rate screen is being tested for OnePlus 17. New information based on the Weibo account called Smart Pikachu shows that OnePlus is considering increasing the screen speed above the current generation. However, the claim describes a testing phase; It does not confirm that the upcoming version of the phone will have a 240 Hz panel.

The post shared by Android Authority in its news dated October 16 associates OnePlus 17 with this high refresh rate. PhoneArena also reported the same claim. Both publications state that it is not certain that the test will turn into a final product. Moreover, it is not yet clear whether the panel offers direct 240 Hz refresh or uses a different display method.

There are two important distinctions in OnePlus 17’s 240 Hz claim

The first distinction is between the refresh rate of the screen and the number of frames the game produces. 240 Hz means that the screen can be refreshed 240 times per second; It does not automatically make a game run at 240 FPS. For this, the game, graphics processor and phone software must support the same goal. In its energy efficiency document for Android game developers, Google also emphasizes that increasing the refresh rate of the panel above the target frame rate of the game may lead to additional power consumption.

By simple calculation, while the time between two refreshes is approximately 8.33 milliseconds at 120 Hz, it decreases to 5.41 milliseconds at 185 Hz and 4.17 milliseconds at 240 Hz. These are the refresh intervals of the panel. Touch detection alone does not indicate the total time required for the game to process the command and for the image to reach the screen. Therefore, based on the expression 240 Hz, it cannot be concluded that the measured latency advantage or motion blur disappears in a particular game.

The second distinction is about how the 240 Hz value is achieved. On the AQUOS R8’s official product page, Sharp explains that it provides image state changes 240 times by inserting black frames between 120 image updates per second. This method is not the same as a native 240 Hz panel, which displays 240 different game frames per second. Since the test claim made for OnePlus 17 does not explain this technical detail, it is not possible to evaluate the “first real 240 Hz phone” yet.

OnePlus 16’s official specs offer more solid ground for comparison

If 240 Hz testing is carried over to the final product, there will be an approximately 30 percent increase in refresh frequency compared to 185 Hz. On the other hand, the gain in the refresh interval will remain at approximately 1.24 milliseconds. This account embodies the increase in screen speed; It does not promise equally better gaming performance or longer battery life. The decisive details for the user will be which games will support this speed and whether the phone can maintain the high frame rate for a long time.

There is no confirmed spec list accompanying this leak regarding the OnePlus 17’s battery capacity, processor, and variable refresh interval of the panel. It would not be correct to list details such as a 9,000 to 10,000 mAh battery, a specific LTPO generation or processor production process as definitive features at this stage. This screen test does not provide any information about the Türkiye price and sales calendar. For now, the limit of the news is clear: It is claimed that the 240 Hz option is being tested for OnePlus 17; It remains unclear with what technology and under what usage conditions this will happen.
