X is preparing a new change that will make the Community Notes system more visible. According to the information shared by Elon Musk, users who interact with a post added to Community Notes will be notified via direct message in the future. Thus, people who engage in interactions such as liking, resharing or replying will be able to be more easily informed of the correction note added later to the relevant post. Musk did not share any date for when the feature would be available.
In the current system, users who interact with a post that has Community Notes added are notified only through the X application or web version. For this to happen, the added note must be considered useful by contributors and remain visible for at least 24 hours. In addition, the owners of posts about which Community Notes have been published are also notified after the note remains live for at least six hours. Since direct messages are expected to attract more attention than standard notifications, the planned change may increase the likelihood that users will see corrections.
X How does the Community Notes system work?
Community Notes are one of the main tools X uses to combat misinformation. The first version of the system was launched under the name “Birdwatch” during the Twitter period in 2021, and it began to be implemented across the platform under its current name in 2022. The basis of the approach is that users add explanatory notes to potentially misleading posts. Notes that are determined to be useful by the joint evaluation of contributors with different opinions become visible at the bottom of the post. Thus, instead of removing the content, it is aimed to provide additional information that strengthens the context of the post.
However, there are mixed reviews about the effectiveness of the Community Notes system. The study, published in the journal Nature Communications in May 2026 and examining 237 thousand 180 sharing chains, including posts with Community Notes added and their re-sharing, reveals that the system can reduce the spread of posts containing false information after adding notes. However, researchers point out that notes often become visible after the first stage of the post, when it spreads the fastest. For this reason, the system is considered a method that slows down the subsequent circulation of misinformation rather than preventing its initial spread.
X continues to improve the Community Notes system. The company recently announced an innovation that allows contributors to request draft notes created by artificial intelligence instead of writing the notes entirely themselves. These drafts are not published directly; It becomes visible if sufficient consensus is reached after being evaluated by other contributors. With the addition of direct message notifications, Community Notes are expected to increase user awareness. However, debates are expected to continue about how effective the system can be in the early hours, when misinformation spreads fastest.
