X launches new “Chat” platform with encryption and video calling support

Social media platform Designed to replace the existing direct message (DM) infrastructure, Chat integrates many functions found in modern messaging applications into the X platform.

New features include advanced options such as end-to-end encrypted communication, voice and video calling, file sharing, and editing and deleting sent messages. It has been announced that this new system, which is currently active in iOS and web versions, will also be available for Android devices soon.

X Increases security with chat system

The new Chat system stands out with a number of security measures aimed at increasing user privacy. The encryption feature, which was previously available in limited form, has now been extended to group conversations and media files. However, users are notified when a screenshot is taken, thus providing more control over the privacy of conversations. However, X notes that the current system still has some technical limitations. The company states that it is working on new security solutions that will allow users to verify encrypted conversations.

According to the information in the help center, the Chat system still does not offer full protection against “man-in-the-middle” attacks. In such attacks, a malicious individual or a platform employee responding to mandatory legal processes can gain access to encrypted conversations. It is noteworthy that the company acted transparently on this issue and clearly stated that the parties would not be able to notice such a violation. Therefore, improvements in security are expected to directly affect the long-term reliability of the Chat system.

In addition, a voice note feature is also being worked on, where X users can send short voice messages. This feature, which has not yet been activated, will make it possible to communicate quickly and practically, especially on mobile devices. All of the developed functions aim to go beyond text-based messaging and create a richer interaction experience within the platform.

The new Chat system advances the communication capacity of the platform not only in technical terms but also in terms of user habits. Users will now be able to conduct encrypted correspondence in both one-on-one and group conversations, share media and documents securely, and make video or voice calls when necessary. Gathering all these features under one roof enables X to gain a more competitive structure in the messaging field.
